K2 2023

The Solstrand seminar will focus on developing our new strategy plan. Therefore, I want everyone to start thinking about the strategy already now (see current strategy). How will the biomedical ecosystem look like in 2023 and what will K2’s position be? To conduct research in the international front and at the same time offer state-of-the art top notch teaching, we must both have a vision and a mission. To inspire and boost your imagination I include an overview of how Harvard Medical School thinks about strategy.

To concretise how to achieve our goals, I include some thoughts:

– Should we seek to introduce a scheme of unpaid clinical instructors to improve patient-near teaching, and thereby release more time for research?

– Should our recruitment policy focus more on excellence in fewer areas, and to a greater extent cover the teaching needs with university lecturers?

– How can we cooperate even closer with the hospitals so that we are better equipped to compete for research grants nationally and internationally?

– How can we organize our time so that we have more time for creative work and have to spend less time on administration?

There is obviously much more to discuss. Therefore input to the strategy plan is welcomed already now (post@k2.uib.no). See you at Solstrand.

(Norwegian) Frist for å søke forskningstermin for 2020

Fakultetet ønsker å minne om fristen 1. mai for å søke om forskningstermin for 2020.

Vitenskapelig tilsatte i fast stilling finansiert av UiB/Det medisinsk-odontologiske fakultet, har anledning til å søke om forskningstermin.

Den enkelte søker fyller ut søknadsskjema og eventuelle vedlegg, og leverer komplett søknad til instituttet. Instituttleder skal anbefale, eventuelt ikke anbefale, søknaden. Dersom det er flere søkere fra samme institutt, blir det satt opp en prioritert liste over søkerne.

(Norwegian) Publikasjoner i Tidskrift for Den norske legeforening om forskerlinjen i Bergen

To artikler om forskerlinjen i Bergen er publisert i Tidskrift for Den norske legeforening (nr 3/2019), til og med en editorial fra Tidsskriftet.

Tidligere forskerlinjestudenter, Anna Therese Bjerkreim, Karl Erik Muller og Ingeborg Eskerud har tatt initiativet til denne studien rundt forskerlinjen i Bergen. Alle har fortsatt i ph.d stipend etter endt forskerlinje og er i ferd med å skrive sammen og levere inn sine respektive ph.d grader.

Studiene viser at:
God veiledning og et egnet forskningsprosjekt er viktig for at forskerlinjestudenter fullfører. Videre at;

Mange medisinstudenter som har gått Forskerlinjen ved Universitetet i Bergen fortsetter med forskning etter fullført studium. Dette gjelder også de som ikke fullfører forskerlinjeløpet.

Studiene hadde stor oppslutning i det 69% svarte på henvendelsen. Det planlegges en oppfølgingsstudie om ca 5 år.

Vi tror at forskerlinjestudentene er en ressurs også når de jobber som leger/tannleger. Forskeropplæring gir en metodisk tilnærming til det man lærer, og studiene viser at forskerlinjestudenten fortsetter med forskning. Disse legene kan i så måte i framtiden være potensielle ledere for forskningen på sine respektive sykehusavdelinger. Våre data kan ikke vise denne antagelsen fordi det er gått for kort tid etter spesialisering, men vi håper oppfølgingsstudien om noen år kan gi oss svar. God lesning!

Prize for Best Oral Communication

At the 40th winter meeting of European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Pharmacology And Molecular Mechanisms (PAMM)
group, Dr. Gro Vatne Røsland presented her work ‘Epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) is associated with attenuation of succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) in breast cancer, through reduced expression of SDHC’. For this scientific presentation she was awarded the Prize for Best Oral Communication. The annual meeting of the EORTC PAMM Group in Oncology took place in Verona, Italy February 6th-9th 2019.

Gro is currently working as a postdoctoral fellow in a project
collaboration between the mitochondrial research group headed by Prof
Karl Johan Tronstad at IBM and Prof Olav Dahl at the oncology department
at Haukeland University Hospital. Her scholarship is funded by
Helse-Vest.

The prize is very well deserved, and we convey our congratulations!

New names

Burhan began as a substitute in the fall of 2018 as senior executive in the finance department of K2. Now we can finally present him as a permanent employee at the department in the same position.

K2 welcomes him as a permanent adition to the administration team.

Nutrition Care Process (NCP). Bruk i klinikk og forskning

Nutrition Care Process (NCP) er en arbeidsprosess og terminologi for klinisk ernæring. Metoden ble etablert i 2003 som et resultat av flere tiårs arbeid som startet i USA på 70-tallet. Dagens versjon har 1649 termer som er organisert i områdene kartlegging, ernæringsdiagnoser og ernæringsintervensjon. NCP er en systematisk prosess som beskriver hvordan kliniske ernæringsfysiologer utfører ernæringsbehandling og er utformet for å gi struktur og kvalitet av denne. NCP fremmer kritisk tenkning og er et verktøy for å måle resultat av ernæringsbehandling. Terminologien er like anvendelig i forskning som i klinisk arbeid.

Lene Thoresen er klinisk ernæringsfysiolog ved Kreftklinikken på St. Olavs hospital og har en bistilling på Nasjonal kompetansetjeneste for sykdomsrelatert underernæring, OUS. Hun leder Arbeidsgruppen for profesjonell praksis – terminologi og metode i Kliniske ernæringsfysiologers forening (KEFF), deltar i The International Nutrition Care Process and Terminology Implementation Survey (INIS) og er representert i «Faglig referansegruppe for helsefaglige kodeverk. Indremedisin og ikke-kirurgiske fagområder», Direktoratet for eHelse. Siden 2018 har hun ledet Programgruppen for klinisk ernæringsfysiologutdanningen i Kunnskapsdepartementet.

PhD comics

BOA and the institute economy

K2, as we know the department, is entirely dependent on BOA (contribution and commission financed activity). In 2018, the Faculty achieved a new record of NOK 291 million in BOA, where K2 contributed with NOK 112 million.

The BOA activity is calculated based on spent funds, not granted funds. In other words, one must use the funds before they are included in the BOA activity. Overhead from positions and acquisitions and RBO (result-based redistribution) constitutes the largest post in the BOA accounts. RBO comes partly from external projects, partly as a result of graduated PhD and publication points.

BOA, grant and commission funded activity; GB, basic grant; OH, overhead; RBO, result-based redistribution.

Of the 105 million added by BOA, NOK 19 million goes to UiB centrally, NOK 11 million to the faculty and NOK 75 million to the departments. One NOK in BOA generated 0.25 NOK extra on K2’s budget; this amounted to almost 29 million in 2018. Converted into positions the 29 million equals 29 full professors or 145 professors in part time positions.

Of the external projects, EU grants are by far the most valuable projects for K2 since each NOK from EU generates another NOK. In comparison, each NOK from the research council of Norway generates extra 0.10 NOK.

What are the implications for K2? First and foremost, we must continue and apply for external funding. Secondly, that we must increase our portfolio of EU. To inspire you, the faculty has just adopted new incentives in the form of extra scholarships and postdoctoral positions for groups that receive larger grants. I hope this can help encourage high application activity the coming year.

(Norwegian) Arbeidsliv i endring – hva med arbeidsmiljøet?

Vernetjenesten ved UiB inviterer ansatte og ledere til frokostseminar 21. februar.

Fleksibel – digital – endringsrettet
Hvordan tar vi vare på arbeidsmiljøet i et mer effektivt, fleksibelt og digitalt arbeidsliv? Et godt arbeidsmiljø kjennetegnes av god ledelse, medvirkning fra ansatte og tydelige organisatoriske rammer. Kompetanse, mestring og anerkjennelse gir både trygghet og trivsel.

Vernetjenesten ved UiB ønsker å skape en arena ved UiB der vi kan ta opp betydningen av arbeidsmiljø. Vi vil invitere til frokostseminarer for å snakke om arbeidsliv og arbeidsmiljø under endring og omstilling. Målgruppen er alle ansatte og ledere. Samlingene vil bli holdt ulike steder på campus.

Det tredje frokostseminaret arrangeres torsdag 21. februar kl. 08.30-10.00 i Allegaten 66, Auditorium A. Dørene åpner kl. 08.00 med enkel servering fra kl. 08.15.

Small research funds 2019

It is time for the allocation of small research funds (SMÅFORSK). The funds are available due to a joint event between RCN and UiB. The intention of these funds is that funds will be awarded research groups that have not been endowed large allocations so that they can start new projects. Applicants can ask for means to cover expenses for travel, seminars, courses, materials, technical-administrative assistance and other operating expenses. It is a requirement that the applicant should hold a permanent position, be an active researcher at K2, and that the applicant can document that he/she has applied for funds from other external sources during the last two years.

Requirements for application and criteria for allocation:
·         The research group leader shall be applicant
·         The purpose of the use of funds must be justified and should be discussed and prioritized within the research group
·         It must be documented that the group in 2017 or 2018 has applied other external sources for research funds covering the present purpose
·         The funds must be used this year and can therefore not be transferred to next year
·         Benefits go to research groups that do not already have large assets

Styret for Konsul Søren Falch og øyenlege Sigurd Falchs fond for medisinsk vitenskap har vedteke å stille til rådvelde ein Juniorpris for 2019 til unge forskarar under 40 år.

Fondet sine statuttar seier at:

formålet er å fremje medisinske vitskapelege arbeid
arbeida skal være av stor vitskapeleg eller sosial betyding
arbeida kan være frå alle greiner av medisinsk vitskap
arbeida skal være fullførte

Styret har fastsett prisen til kr 50.000,- i driftsmidlar til forskaren.

Framlegg til kandidatar til prisen kan fremjast av instituttleiarar og professorar ved Det medisinske fakultet og skal innehalde:

kandidaten sin curriculum vitae
kandidaten si publikasjonsliste
dokumenterte resultat av arbeida
fagleg omtale av forslaget (maksimalt to sider)
ei beskrivande framstilling av kandidaten sitt arbeid i språkform for det alminnelegepublikum (pressemelding)

På grunnlag av fondet sine statuttar tildelast prisen etter desse kriteria:

Djuptgåande, originale arbeid med metodisk kompleksitet.
Forskingsfunn som har ført til anvendte resultat i form av ny eller forbetradiagnostikk, terapi eller forståing.

FORSLAG TIL FALCHS FORELESNING (The Falch lecture) 2020

Fagmiljøene ved instituttene inviteres herved til å fremme forslag til Falchs forelesning 2020.

Rammen for tildelingen er kr 30.000,- til dekning av honorar og reise- og oppholdsutgifter. Kostnadsoverslag bes lagt ved søknaden. Det kan bli aktuelt med flere tildelinger.

Retningslinjer for Falchs forelesning:

1. Forslagsstiller er Styret som kan invitere generelt anerkjente forskere på Nobelprisnivå eller meget høyt internasjonalt nivå til å holde en gjesteforelesning og/eller seminar ved Det medisinske fakultet.

2. Styret kan invitere ansatte til å fremme forslag og dokumentere deres forskningsinnsats. Kriteriene kan være publisering i prestisjetunge vitenskapelige tidsskrift, internasjonale priser, lederfunksjoner i tungtveiende og aktive internasjonale vitenskapelige sammenslutninger og konferanser.

3. Falch Lecturer bør ha samarbeid med eller bidratt på annen måte til forskningsvirksomheten ved Det medisinske fakultet. Dette er likevel ikke et krav for å foreslå en kandidat.

4. Falch Lecturer tildeles diplom som markerer begivenheten.

(Norwegian) Nye retningslinjer for støtte til utenlandsopphold

Vi minner om at frist for å søke støtte til utenlandsopphold for stipendiater og postdoktorer er 1.3.2019.

Dette gjelder utenlandsopphold fra høsten 2019. Neste søknadsfrist er 1.10.2019

Vi gjør oppmerksom på at det er nye retningslinjer for støtte til utenlandsopphold for stipendiater og postdoktorer.

Nettsidene vil bli oppdatert, men grunnet kort tid til søknadsfrist sendes informasjon her – endringene er uthevet med rødt.

Største endringen er at stipendiatene får støtte etter samme månedssatser som faste vitenskapelige og postdoktorer (18.000/33.000) og perioden for utenlandsopphold er økt til inntil 12 måneder. Utenlandsopphold utover 6 måneder vil bli prioritert.

For både postdok og stipendiater vil det kun gi støtte etter familiesatser ved opphold på 6 måneder eller mer.

CCBIO Seminars February 21st at Aud. 4 BBB in the CCBIO/Harvard INTPART partnership, and other open Harvard lectures February 18 and 19

We are happy to invite to no less than two CCBIO Seminars Thursday February 21st, organized as part of the CCBIO/Harvard INTPART partnership. This gives us a unique opportunity to learn from the experiences of our Harvard colleagues. The seminars are open for all, including waffles and coffeebefore the first seminar, and informal pizza get togetherfollowing the afternoon seminar.

This time we are visited by Magali Saint-Geniezfrom Harvard Medical School and Schepens Eye Research Institute of Massachusetts, and Diane Bielenbergfrom the Vascular Biology Program, Boston Children’s Hospital, Department of Surgery, Harvard Medical School.

Of general interest, we can particularly recommend the lecture at 14.00-15.00 Tuesday Feb. 19th, titled: “The “Science” of Branding; the value of a core message“. This aims to provide valuable and readily implementable tools to increase individual (students, researchers, PIs) marketability through personal branding, and highlight unique and special features that would particularly appeal to a potential recruiter or collaborator. Regarding the other lectures, professor Saint-Geniez’ lectures will be of particular interest to our ophthalmology environment, and Professor Bielenberg’s lectures will be of interest to all cancer researchers.

Our institute recognizes the importance of good teaching to the extent that we have a REALLY BIG PRIZE to be awarded to the person/educational environment that has distinguished itself during the previous year(s). This may be related to clinical or para-clinical teaching, within any of the areas for which K2 is responsible. It can be directly student-related or more organizational; to create a new study program,

(Norwegian) UiBs Humaniorastrategi 2018-2022: utlysning av såkornsmidler til tverrfakultært samarbeid

UiBs Humaniorastrategi har som et av sine hovedmål å styrke UiBs og de humanistiske fagenes gjennomslag i Forskningsrådets programmer.

Det utlyses herved såkornsmidler til tverrfakultært samarbeid som skal invitere forskere i humanistiske fag til å søke samarbeid med forskere fra andre fagdisipliner. Såkornsmidlene skal brukes til å forberede en prosjektsøknad til Forskningsrådets satsning på humanioraforskning.

Important information for those who have a UiB mobile phone: change of mobile telephone operator

When the Norwegian higher education sector changes mobile telephone operator from Telenor to Telia, all employees with mobile subscriptions paid by UiB have to change SIM card in their mobile phone.

New SIM cards are being sent to all departments and will be distributed to the individual users.

Telia will send you an SMS with the time for transfer of your subscription.
You will receive this about a week in advance. You must not use the Telia SIM card before the assigned time.

Please note:

Your Telenor subscription will stop working from the time of transfer.
As UiB no longer has any contract with Telenor, we are not able to make exceptions from the transfer.
Telia coverage of indoors areas at UiB’s campus will be complete at time of transfer.

CCBIO Jr Scientist Symposium February 14th

Dear all,

We are delighted to invite you to the upcoming CCBIO Jr Scientist Symposium, February 14^th. Professor Inge Jonassen will give an inspirational lecture where he will present his educational path from a young aspiring student to professor and the senior position he now holds. Further, we will hear about professor Jonassen’s ongoing research and the new center for data science CEDAS at the University of Bergen. As increasingly more research involves bioinformatics and handling of big data, this lecture should be relevant for most PhD students and postdoctoral fellows.

In addition, local PhD students and Post-docs will present their research on topics including ethics in medicine (Tranvåg), mechanisms of AXL signaling (D’mello Peters, Hellesøy) and the importance of stromal cells in cancer (Dongre, Kjølle).

Time: Thursday February 14th 2019 at 10.00-14.00.

My name is David Forsse, I started as a PhD candidate in the Bergen Gynecologic Cancer Research Group in September 2017. I’m a Gynecologist and currently on leave from my clinical employment. It’s exciting to learn new research methods and explore different facets of my field.

My name is Einar Marius Hjellestad Martinsen. I started as a ph.d. student at the Clinical Respiratory Research Group at Department of Clinical Science (K2) in September 2018. My ph.d. project aims to characterize the fungal community (mycobiome) in the lungs of healthy people and COPD patients, and to report motives for participation in our project. My office is located at fifth floor in the Lab building (Laboratoriebygget). You are welcome to meet me there for a (scientific) chat, or you can send me an e-mail to einar.martinsen@uib.no.
