10X Genomics seminar June the 15th at 09:00 in Bygg for Biologiske Basalfag

We are very pleased to invite you to our seminar “See biology in new ways with single cell and spatial technology”.

The event will be held on June the 15th at 9:00 at the Bygg for Biologiske Basalfag next to the Haukeland University Hospital.

This will be a morning event that will be followed by a pizza lunch, and you will be able to hear about the latest developments in the field of single cell and spatial RNA sequencing, and how Chromium Single Cell, Visium Spatial, and Xenium In Situ platforms from 10x Genomics can help you push the boundaries of your research. Local researchers form the University of Bergen will also explain their research and showcase the applications of our technology on their research.

The aim of this meeting is to help transfer knowledge, give an opportunity to network with those undertaking similar experiments, and support researchers interested in single-cell and spatial transcriptomics. Register to the talks here.

BildeThis week, the Bioinformatics in Bergen conference organized by the Computational Biology Unit gathered more than 60 researchers interested in bioinformatics as well as renown international speakers. The conference was a tremendous success. A Master’s student and a PhD candidate were awarded with prizes for poster and talk… and both are from K2! Most funding schemes incorporate innovation perspectives into their application templates. These are especially visible in the chapters on impact but go beyond and should be found as a red line throughout a good research project – or rather, research and innovation project.

Increasing your literacy on the innovation topic will not only increase your abilities to succeed with grants, but also help you make your research more relevant to society. In this course, we will discuss what “innovation” in academia actually means, get inspiration from good examples, learn about ways to increase your innovation potential, talk about innovation management in practice and about ways to collaborate with partners outside of academia; oftentimes a prerequisite for successful innovation.

Public Consultation on the SRIA for the future European Partnership for Rare Diseases

The Public Consultation on the Strategic Research & Innovation Agenda of the future European Rare Diseases Partnership is now open. You can share your voice here by the 09/06/2023.

Under Horizon Europe, the European Commission together with Member States and Associated Countries decided to implement the Rare Diseases Partnership which brings a unique vision that aims at leaving no one behind by supporting robust patient need-led research, by utilising and maximizing the power of health and research data, by engaging and coordinating regional, national, EU and international alignment in order to accelerate the development of new treatments and diagnostic pathways.

To build its strategy on the voice and input of all stakeholders and as part of the preparatory process of this future Rare Diseases Partnership (foreseen start in 2024) the Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda of the RD Partnership is now open for public consultation.

We hope to gather the inputs of all types of stakeholders to make sure that the actions of the partnership will fit the needs and expectations of rare diseases community.

Both organisations and individuals can participate in this hearing.

The annual K2 Junior Retreat for PhD candidates, post docs and researchers were held at Alrek on 27th of April. The aim of the retreat is to connect young researchers at the institute, and the program included speed dating exercises and elevator talks. Psychologist Andreas Schei, from the UiB HR department, held a session about the ups and down during the PhD.

He shared some worrying numbers and observations on mental health problems among young researchers, indicating that 25 – 50% will qualify for a mental disorder at some point during their research, and that there is a close connection between well-being, mental disorders, and dropout. However, the good news is that you can avoid emotional overwhelm by taking good care of yourself.  Social interaction and belonging are some of the best ways to boost our emotional strength to meet these challenges.

Following on Scheis´ advise: “It is harder to rebuild than to do preventive measures”, we are starting up a social committee at K2, to arrange fun get-togethers and create an arena to meet your fellows in a relaxed atmosphere.  We strongly advise you to join and to build a social network together with us. To commemorate this, the University of Bergen, in collaboration with Sasakawa Health Foundation, is proud to host an official anniversary conference in Bergen Norway, 20-22. June 2023. I’m Sabrina John Moyo and I work on the Fifth floor at Clinical Institute 2 (K2).

From January 2023, I started working as a Researcher, but I worked previously from 2010 to 2014 as a Research Fellow followed up by a post-Doctoral position here at UiB.

My work involves conducting research on various infectious diseases with emphasis on Antimicrobial Resistance, overseeing and supervising our ongoing research projects in developing countries, publications of our research results, writing grant applications and supervising PhD students.

What I like most about my job is the flexibility and the ability of doing a variety of tasks with good collaboration from colleagues.

My work involves different things therefore how I spend most of my day at work will depend on the task at that time e.g., writing or reviewing manuscripts for publications, virtual or physical meetings of our research projects with all collaborators, performing or supervising laboratory work when needed as well as applications for ethical approval for our research projects.

I have been enjoying all the years that I have worked at K2. I like my job because first of good colleagues, teamwork and collaboration within the research group which allows us to achieve our goals. And the goals of the institute in general.  Secondly, is positive and safe working environment at K2.

Dear everyone!

There were many from both UiB and Haukeland hospitals who competed for the 4 final places in order to apply to K.G. Jebsen centers for medical research. As many as 3 out of 4 researchers who were invited to send a full application are from K2: Eva Gerdts, Bjørn Tore Gjertsen and Stian Knappskog. Congratulations! May 17th is approaching with great steps, and all UiB employees are invited to participate in the main procession (departure from Museplassen at 9:30, or meeting at 10:15 at Koengen, kolonne 4). We will keep an eye on the weather forecast, but so far it looks promising 😊 With the Ascension of Christ the day after May17th, there are probably many who take a long weekend. There will therefore be no K2nytt next Friday.
