The invisible work that keeps world trade going

Through extensive fieldwork aboard several tankers, social anthropologist Marianna Betti has gained unique insight into the lives of those who live and work at sea.

80 to 90 percent of all global trade is carried by sea. Merchant ships are truly the backbone of the world economy, but the people who operate these ships are quite invisible.
