The Research Days (September 16–27) are an annual, national festival organized by the Research Council of Norway.

I Bergen arrangeres Forskningsdagene as a collaboration between the city's central research and educational institutions, with UiB being the largest contributor. The Research Days are an excellent opportunity to communicate research to a broad audience and make UiB research better known – both locally, regionally and nationally.

Renovation work in the BB building

Reconstruction will be carried out in the BB building (Jonas Lies vei 91). The work includes the Physiology rooms on the 2nd floor and the Histology rooms on the 4th floor, including associated rooms. The reconstruction involves new floor plans, renovation of surfaces and upgrades to technical installations such as ventilation, electrical and AV equipment.

The work will continue until December 2026 for the areas on the 2nd floor, and until spring 2027 for the areas on the 4th floor. The work will take place on weekdays between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., and periods of noise in nearby areas and rooms must be expected. This may disrupt teaching.

Critical time periods will be clarified between the project administration and the Faculty of Medicine.

Welcome to Knowledge Festival

Dear colleague,

On Sunday, April 12, the University of Bergen opens its doors and invites the entire city to the Knowledge Festival.

Through lectures, exhibitions and activities for young and old, we showcase the breadth of our research.

The event is free and open to everyone, and takes place from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM in the University Museum.

I hope many of you have the opportunity to take the trip – preferably with family, friends or colleagues – and help make the Knowledge Festival a good meeting place between the university and the city.

PhD students receive a reduced participation fee for SSI2026 through HUIMM905

Bergen is hosting the 51st annual conference of the Scandinavian Society for Immunology (SSI2026) from September 7–10. This year, the course HUIMM905 “From Innate to Specific Immunity” will also be held in connection with the conference and summer school.

To ease the financial burden for students, Bergen Research School in Inflammation offers a scholarship scheme of 2000 NOK in reimbursement of the conference fee for participants in HUIMM905. The course also provides 3 credits (ECTS).

SSI2026 brings together leading immunologists, researchers and clinicians from around the world to share new knowledge, build networks and strengthen the professional community. The Student and Early Career Meeting prior to the conference provides a special arena for learning, mentoring and professional development.

How to register The course has space for 20 students, and PhD candidates at the University of Bergen will be given priority. To receive reimbursement, participants must present their own research and actively participate in both the summer school and the conference.

Registration is via the conference registration portal. Confirmation of registration and abstract must be sent to the course coordinator piotr.mydel@uib.no by May 18th.

We look forward to welcoming participants to SSI2026 in Bergen.

With iPad and scales, Gro went from worry to mastery

At home in her living room, guided on screen by physiotherapist Cecilie S. Hagemann, Gro G. Wang trained herself to endure cancer surgery and recover quickly afterward.

To kvinner står innendørs ved store vinduer; den ene holder et nettbrett og smiler, mens den andre vender seg mot kameraet med et nøytralt uttrykk.

The day after she was diagnosed with bowel cancer just before Christmas in 2023, Wang received a call from
Bærum Hospital. Would she consider participating in a patient study on prehabilitation?

In the three weeks leading up to the surgery, she would then receive dietary advice, daily exercise led by
a physiotherapist, as well as psychosocial follow-up if necessary.

– Of course, she replied. Both because she is a generally curious woman, and because she understood that
This way she would have something else and more constructive to concentrate on than the illness.
