Help for student literature reviews

Finally, the library’s online course “Student literature reviews in medicine and health sciences” is published on MittUiB. The course is intended for students in medicine and health sciences writing a literature review as their bachelor or master’s thesis. It is open accessible, in Norwegian and English. We have also included a module for advisors. The course was published in September 2023, and is easy to find at the medical library’s webpages about courses and guidance.

The course is divided into modules according the different steps in the work with a literature review: searching, project proposal, documentation, screening, dealing with search results, team work, quality assessment, data extraction and writing. We also present some digital tools as databases, EndNote, and how to use rayyan, which contains an AI-component.

The target groups for this course are mainly bachelor students and master students who write a literature review. However, the course contains practical guides which could be useful for researchers doing a systematic review, and a specific module for advisors.

As advisors, you may have some thoughts about this course? It is newly published, and we are happy to get feedback from you.

Please, have a look, and discuss with your colleagues.

Kind regards from the Medical library
Barbara, Christine, Ida and Regina

Procedures for sick leave

Today, I have just a short reminder for you. The influenza season is approaching, in addition to the ongoing round of COVID-19. This may lead to absences that require self-reporting and medical certificates. When you have sick leave, please remember the following procedures:

  1. Inform your supervisor.
  2. Report self-reported absences through the self-service portal under “Time” and “Leave requests.”
  3. If you have a medical certificate, whether in paper or digital form:
    • Paper: Submit Part C and Part D filled out and signed to your supervisor. Remember to fill out the self-declaration form. Your unit should then forward the medical certificate to the Service Team for Absences and Parental Leave.
    • Digital: Send it to your employer via Your NAV on the first day of your absence. Apply for sickness benefits when you receive a message from NAV.

Many people forget to notify their immediate supervisor, but it is crucial to remember this!

Have a great weekend!

National investment in artificial intelligence

RCN invites to input meetings on investment in artificial intelligence, 5, 6 and 7 November.

We are also invited to provide written input by 8 November.

https://www.forskningsradet.no/forskningspolitikk-strategi/ltp/kunstig-intelligens/

The research initiative has three main tracks

  1. Research on the consequences of artificial intelligence and other digital technology for society. Central topics will be democracy, trust, ethics, economics, rule of law, legal regulations, privacy, teaching and learning, art and culture.
  2. Digital technologies as a research area in themselves, i.e. research on artificial intelligence, digital security, next-generation ICT, new sensors and quantum technology.
  3. Research on how digital technologies can be used for innovation in industry and the public sector and how artificial intelligence can be used in research in many different disciplines.

We hope the academic communities will participate in the input meetings.

Area in the Laboratory Building

The Faculty of Medicine has a substantial amount of space available at Campus Haukeland. Some of these areas are dedicated university spaces, such as the Building for Basic Biological sciences (BBB), while others are leased by Helse Bergen. These areas are, of course, central to teaching and research.

In recent years, the leasing costs have significantly increased. It is, therefore, necessary to assess whether the use of these spaces is optimal. K2 has access to a lot of research space in the Laboratory Building. Many of these spaces are more or less free, as part of the old Haukeland agreement, while some of the areas come with a price that is substantial. Since research activity related to “wet lab” is less today than before due to a shift in research activities towards more “dry lab” and the use of core facilities, we are now investigating the possibility of managing with somewhat less laboratory space. Any savings in leasing costs will benefit K2 and be positive for K2’s tight budget. This could provide us with more flexibility to reduce the number of positions that currently need to be frozen. A committee led by Silke Appel is examining this possibility.

We will return to the matter in an open process with comprehensive information and an opportunity for input and discussion if it turns out that this becomes relevant.

Have a great weekend!
