Research for the students
The students at the faculty want to have more contact with researchers and academic life. A portal where students can get in touch with us researchers at the departments is therefore being established at the faculty. It is important that more researchers, from PhD-level up to professor, sign up for this portal so that we can reach out to many students. Dear all,
This year’s Broegelmann lecture will be held the 30th May. It is given by Professor Marie Wahren Herlenius, Professor at KI and Professor II at UiB. She has a longstanding interest in Sjögren’s syndrome and has used Sjögren’s patient material to dissect underlying molecular mechanisms of sexual dimorphism in autoimmune diseases. We can look forward to an interesting seminar!

As previously announced, a basic course will be arranged on June 8., which will be repeated on August 23., and a course for advanced students on June 15., which will be repeated on August 30., all between 1000-1100 hrs. Stina Nilsson Helander from Mentimeter will guide us through the course, and will go through everything you need to know to start with Mentimeter. Stina is from Sweden and there will be an opportunity to ask questions in both Norwegian and English both course days. You can ask along the way, and she will also be available for 15 minutes afterwards if any questions.
I work as a research and education consultant, Ph.D.-Coordinator, and study advisor at K2. In practice, this means that I manage most of the work around dissertations and mid-term evaluations. In addition, I have other task in the administration in K2.
What I like best about my job are my colleagues and the good working environment. We are a nice bunch who work for the workplace to bee as good as possible for both candidates and employees at UiB.
Right now I am working on coordinating the semesters final dissertations, so that everyone who is going to defend their thesis before the summer, gets what they need from hotels, dinners, flowers, lunch, auditoriums, robes, folders, messages, signatures etc.
I am lucky to be able to participate in the education of tomorrow`s researchers. It is very fun to collaborate with professionally skilled colleagues and there are always exciting new tasks to get better at!
EU Missions are a new way to bring concrete solutions to some of our greatest challenges. They have ambitious goals and will deliver tangible results by 2030. EU Missions are a novelty of the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme for the years 2021-2027.
One of the relevant missions for researchers at our faculty is the Mission Cancer. It aims to improve the lives of more than 3 million people by 2030 through prevention, cure and for those affected by cancer including their families, to live longer and better.
The Mission Cancer calls 2022 are now open:

Strengthening research capacities of Comprehensive Cancer Infrastructures
Pragmatic clinical trials to optimise treatments for patients with refractory cancers

Applications are open for the annual UiB/LawTransform PhD course on “Effects of Lawfare: Courts and Law as Battlegrounds for Social Change” August 15th -30th (preparatory period from 8th). This is an interdisciplinary course open to students across UiB as well as other institutions in Norway and internationally. It is a hybrid course where the students come to Bergen for the week 22-26 August to take part in the Bergen Exchanges on Law & Social Transformation, but otherwise have digital classes and groupwork. It can also be taken as a fully digital course.
The reality is that writing research proposals is time-consuming with a low success rate. This course will provide a practical guide on how to build on past and current projects funded by the EU, navigate the vast Horizon Europe framework program, and write competitive research proposals.

Mastering academic English is as important as mastering your discipline itself. This is a Course for PhD candidates and Postdoctoral fellows who want to improve their academic writing and presentation skills in English. Dear all of you!
I will use this week’s leader to remind you of two things: RETTE and the teaching day.
I am responsible to follow-up projects at K2 in RETTE, therefore I just have to ask everyone to check that all the necessary information has been transferred from REK (and as of today there are some projects that require change in RETTE). When you log in to the system (https://rette.app.uib.no/), you will have the opportunity to fill in more information about the project and answer some questions and then confirm the project. It is the project managers who are responsible for doing this.
RETTE was established by UiB to comply with GDPR and to ensure that key legislation is followed. UiB shall have an overview and control of all research projects and student assignments that process personal data. Medical/health research projects need approval from REK. Some projects have a consulting duty with the data protection officer, and NSD (Norwegian Centre for Research Data) can help to assess privacy. After assessment or approval, information from NSD and REK is transferred to RETTE.

May boasts of great CCBIO events, including the upcoming CCBIO Junior Scientist Symposium May 12, 2022 (deadline May 9 at 11.00 for onsite participation). Open for all!
We are very excited that Henriette Christie Ertsås (Forskning Til Folket) will be the keynote presenter this time, asking if scientific discovery can ever be compatible with the reigning publishing model, without science and society falling prey. Local junior researchers will present topics related to breast cancer, including how AGR2 relates to aggressive features and the relationship between tumor hypoxia and metastasis. And maybe we will learn where to find fantastic antibodies against the influenza virus?
We are very pleased to be able to meet in person, but the symposium will also be open for digital attendance. Please register within May 9th at 11.00 for those of you who want to attend in person. There is no registration deadline for digital attendance.

Eitri Medical Datathon 2022 is an effort to unleash the potential of data in healthcare and takes place from September 16th to 19th 2022 at Eitri in Bergen, Norway.
Leo Celi from MIT will help facilitate the workshop/datathon. Celi is best known for bringing together clinicians and data scientists to collect and analyze data routinely collected during the healthcare process.
The aim of the Eitri datathon is to utilize previously admitted patients’ data from the emergency room to answer important clinical research questions.
“An equally important aim is to bring together clinicians, data scientist, engineers, industry, and investors for interdisciplinary collaboration aiming to provide better healthcare in the Bergen Hospital, and to the world”, says Director of Eitri, Torleif Markussen Lunde.
Key stakeholders from Haukeland Hospital, HVL, University of Bergen, Curie and Eureka student organizations, have agreed to participate. Clinicians, students, industry, and professors are invited to participate, nationally and internationally.

Who deserves K2’s Teaching Award?
Teaching is one of our core activites and we want to stimulate GOOD teaching at K2!
Our institute wishes to honour a teacher or teaching environment who has demonstrated an extraordinary effort within the field of teaching or development of innovative teaching and learning programs, by forwarding the K2 Teaching Award (NOK 50’000). Think of a nominee an e-mail the name of your candidate and a brief explanation to mette.vesterhus@uib.no by March 15th. The K2 Teaching Award is awarded at the Teaching day in the spring.
“Norway is re-opened, and we are back in the auditoriums!” I yelled into the microphone in September as the students burst into applause in a crowded auditorium at AHH. Restrictions returned after that, but we are going to return to “live” teaching on campus – a decision will be made sometime this month. We will bring along some innovative solutions:
“Videonotat”: The faculty as well as the students want us to provide hybrid solutions, or sufficient information for the students so that they may acquire similar knowledge, in order to accommodate those students who should stay at home due to infection. Hybrid teaching can (most often) be simpler than you might think! In MittUiB there is a link to “Videonotat”.
