The Research Council Innovation Award

The Research Council’s Innovation Award is given to an individual, business or public entity that has achieved innovation through the strategic use of research. To be eligible, the candidate must have received Research Council funding.

For the award, we are always looking for candidates who are involved in moving boundaries for what is possible within a field. The winner receives honor and glory and half a million kroner. The money will be used for innovation activities.

Eitri Medical Datathon

Dear all,

We are hosting the Eitri Medical Datathon, September 16-19, 2022 and are looking forward to seeing many of you there!

The event will consist of two parts – the Datathon during the weekend and the Datathon conference on Monday September 19.

During the datathon, we will form teams of clinicians, data scientists and other enthusiasts. The teams together with mentors/experts from US, Singapore, France, and UK will solve health challenges using real world data and AI. It is an excellent opportunity to work with world leaders in the field!

The conference will bring together clinicians, data scientists, industry, policy makers, and other experts to talk about AI use in healthcare – opportunities and challenges.

For more information, please, check out the website https://www.eitrilab.no/datathon2022, or email us (torleif.lunde@uib.no or maija.slaidina@uib.no).

Editorial

Welcome to the new semester!

Then it’s on again! Hope everyone had a nice holiday and recharged their batteries.

At the time of writing, the students have already started, and many K2 employees are busy again with teaching. It is often in a hurry to get started after the holidays. Transitioning from holiday to hectic university life can be a bit brutal and takes time. New cohorts of students entail additional work at the start. Research never takes a vacation. Although many have picked their e-mails and got rid of the most urgent, for most it has piled up with tasks that now have to be sorted out.

This autumn, K2 must focus on finances. As previously mentioned, for various reasons we now have a large deficit – a development that we must reverse. If we stand together, we will be able to get through this, hopefully even stronger. It is often in adversity that one becomes innovative and completely new ideas are created. So I repeat the call before the summer: Help us figure out how we can manage with slightly fewer areas, slightly fewer people and slightly less funds via K2, and how we can create more income that shows up in K2’s budgets.

Good luck with a new term!

New Horizon Europe calls

Horizon Europe work programme for 2023-24 in the health cluster has been published. Many interesting opportunities for K2 researchers to apply for Research and Innovation Actions (RIA) in all destinations:

  • Destination 3. Tackling diseases and reducing disease burden
  • Destination 4. Ensuring access to innovative, sustainable and high-quality health care
  • Destination 5. Unlocking the full potential of new tools, technologies and digital solutions for a healthy society
  • Destination 6. Maintaining an innovative, sustainable and globally competitive health industry

Many pandemic related calls included. Also personalized medicine. Interdisciplinary approach and collaboration with social sciences and humanities (SSH) often requested. Contact your research advisor (susanna.pakkasmaa@uib.no) for more information.

MRCRM Seminar Series

Title:
Mesenchymal stem cell transplantation in limbal stem cell deficiency – Development of precision medicine

Abstract:
Limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) causes discomfort and reduced vision and is a major problem in ophthalmology. Today, the treatment is transplantation of allogenic limbal stem cells, but this has its limitations.

Mesenchymal stem cells are now emerging as a promising treatment option. The phase 1 clinical trial using these cells in patients with end-stage LSCD will be presented.

Speaker:
Cecilie Bredrup, MD, PhD at HUH og Associate professor at K1, UiB

Time:
30th of August, 14.30-15.30

Where:
Birkhaugsalen, 3rd floor in Sentralblokken, HUH

Welcome to the first seminar this semester in the seminar series of Mohn Research Center for Regenerative Medicine (MRCRM)!

This seminar is open to all. Light refreshments will be served.

It is now possible to create short-term guest accounts in UiBtilgang

The function for short-term guest account (up to 30 days) in UiBtilgang has been unavailable until now.

The function is now in place, and it should be possible to create short-term guest accounts for visitors who need access to log on to a PC, print and/or access the Internet. See guide: https://hjelp.uib.no/solutions/open-knowledge-items/item/KI%201483/en_gb/

Please make sure that you use short-term guest account in cases where it is appropriate, and do not use long-term guest account unless strictly required. Long-term guests get more entitlements and trigger licensing costs.

Data management Plans

A data management plan (DMP) describes how data in a research project will be collected, processed, and made available. Writing a DMP is good scientific practice which helps structuring the data management in a research project and a requirement by research funders, e.g. The Norwegian Research Council or Horizon Europe. See also our information page UiB Library – Data Management Plans.

How to make your data open & FAIR Researchers are encouraged to make their data openly available as early as possible in the research process, and most funders, e.g. Norwegian Research Council or Horizon Europe, and publishers require that the research data from a project is made openly available. In the course you will get an introduction to how you can make your research data open and FAIR, and how to archive your data in our institutional archive UiB Open Research Data. See also our information page UiB Library – Open Access to Research Data.

Open Access publishing step-by-step

Governments, institutions, and research funders expect researchers to make their research openly available. What is open access, why should you make your research publications openly available and what services and support is available at UiB? See also our information page: UiB Library – Open Access Publishing

Make your research visible using researcher profiles Having a researcher profile is a great way to showcase contributions to your field and open science engagement. This seminar will demonstrate how to use ORCID and other researcher profiles to showcase your work. See also MittUiB online course UBB103 Profiles and Publishing Statistics and our information page UiB Library – Bibliometric services and analysis.

Open Access Week

Open Access Week is an annual scholarly communication event focusing on open access and related topics. The national Norwegian program is the result of a collaboration between UiB and several other institutions and infrastructures. Stay tuned!

Finding & reusing research data

Reusing published research data can open new avenues of research and avoids unnecessary duplication of efforts. The webinar will give an introduction to FAIR research data as a resource, explain data citation, and demonstrate strategies to efficiently discover datasets in your discipline.
