New publications
Here are recent publications with contributions from K2 based on last week’s search on PubMed (and optionally articles that have not been included in previous lists). Shalom ve lehitraot
“Peace and see you later” is common to say in Israel where I will spend the next semester as guest professor at The Weizmann Institute of Science. The sabbatical arrangement is a great opportunity to establish new collaborations, build networks and set of time to plan projects and write applications. The network is not only useful for the professor him or herself. It also opens up for exchange of younger researcher in the involved groups. Several of the groups at the institute have used this opportunity in an exemplary way, such as the diabetes and lung research groups.
Staying abroad requires planning not only of the academic project, but also of the practicalities concerning work and studies for any partner, school for children and housing. The faculty provide grants each year, and funds can also be obtained from Helse Vest, the Research Council of Norway, and other funding bodies. Application deadline for research terms is 1 May each year.
It is less common for foreigners to apply for a sabbatical at K2, but our goal should be to attract good researchers from abroad who wish to spend a year with us. Don’t forget this possibility
Finally, I would like to end my term as vice head and short guest appearance as head of department, by saying shalom ve lihitraot. Now, Jone takes over until the new head of the department is ready to start.

Prices for storing research samples in Biobank Haukeland
Biobank Haukeland is a collaboration between Haukeland University Hospital and the University of Bergen. The primary goal for Biobank Haukeland is increased research quality for the two institutions.
Biobank Haukeland has procured an automatic storage facility for research samples, with a capacity of storing 2.5 million biobank tubes. Biobank Haukeland will be in operation in February 2018.
All sample material stored in Biobank Haukeland will be registered in LabVantage. LabVantage is a laboratory information management system for research samples procured by Helse Vest.
The users of Biobank Haukeland must pay for deposit and withdrawal of research samples, in addition to yearly rent. The project is not yet closed, and the presented prices are therefore estimated based on the current cost estimate. Price changes may therefore occur.

An editorial highlighting the research of Lien and Lønning
In an editorial in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, V. Craig Jordan highlights important findings from the research of two senior scientists at the institute, Professors Ernst Lien and Per Eystein Lønning.

Proof-of-Concept funding (FORNY2020)
Bergen Teknologioverføring (BTO) informs that it is now possible to apply for Proof-of-Concept funding (FORNY2020).
Researchers with current projects must contact BTO as soon as possible and at latest by 10 September for initial project discussions. In other words, time is short.
Proof-of-Concept funding from the Research Council of Norway are a golden opportunity to raise funds for testing, scaling up and continuing research projects, independent of research fields.

Suggestions for master projects at Centre for International Health
Centre of International Health (CIH) is now developing suggestions for master thesis projects in Global Health. This is an opportunity to engage in Global Health activities, and we therefore invite scientific staff in your department to contribute with project proposals.
At CIH the distribution of proposed projects to the master students will be done in the following way:
- CIH will present the proposed project proposals to the master students in a meeting.
- Each student will submit a ranked list of three desired projects.
- When a supervisor and a student have agreed on a project, the two will be paired.
- In case two or more students are interested in the same project, the supervisor will select who is the best match.

Deadline for proposals: Wednesday 13 September 2017.

Translational Medicine ‘17 | Educational workshops
Seminar about research stay abroad | 5 October
International Center at UoB invites scientific personnel, PhD candidates and researchers who are planning a research stay abroad to a seminar. The seminar will be held by advisor at the HR department.

Centre for Digital Life Norway invites to a network meeting about “Methodologies for Digital Life – Focus on Metabolic Systems”.
