Iodine Nutrition and Thyroid Function

In connection to Synnøve Næss’ PhD defense, Maternal and infant iodine nutrition and thyroid function – A cohort study of pregnant and postpartum women and their infants in Norway, the Institute of Marine Research and the University of Bergen are hosting a mini seminar on current research on iodine nutrition and thyroid function.

13:00–13:45: Sheila Skeaff, Professor, University of Otago, New Zealand: Estimating household salt use in New Zealand and its contribution to iodine intakes

13:45–14:30: Bjørn Olav Åsvold, Professor, Norwegian University of Science and Technology: Thyroid dysfunction: An overview of its epidemiology and association with iodine status

14:30–15:00: Sigrun Henjum, Professor, Oslo Metropolitan University, Norway: Benefit and risk assessment of iodization of household salt and salt used in bread and bakery products in Norway

 Professor Skeaff has an MSc in Nutritional Biochemistry from the University of Guelph (Canada) and a PhD in Human Nutrition from the University of Otago. She conducts research on the iodine status of sub-groups of the population, including children and pregnant women. Professor Skeaff is also interested in elucidating the consequences of mild iodine deficiency on normal growth and development, including cognition.

Bjørn Olav Åsvold, MD, PhD, is a Professor of Medicine (Epidemiology) at the HUNT Research Center and the K.G. Jebsen Center for Genetic Epidemiology, Department of Public Health and Nursing, NTNU. He is also a Consultant Endocrinologist at St. Olavs Hospital, Trondheim University Hospital. His main research areas include endocrine and cardiovascular epidemiology using data from the HUNT Study (Nord-Trøndelag Health Study) linked with national health registries.

Sigrun Henjum, PhD, is a Professor in Nutrition and Head of Studies at the Department of Nursing and Health promotion at the Faculty of Health Sciences, Oslo Metropolitan University, Norway. Her subject areas are public health nutrition, clinical nutrition, micronutrient defiencies, breastfeeding/complementary feeding, iodine deficiency and excess, growth and development, and nutriotional epidemiology.
