CURRENT RESEARCH FUNDING ANNOUNCEMENTS/DEADLINES (EXTERNAL)


Research Council of Norway (Forskningsrådet NFR)


Research Program on Sickness Absence, Work and Health (SYKEFRAVÆR) The programme is announcing funding for research on the role that competence and skills play in promoting inclusion in working life, and the connections between insufficient skills and health. There is a particular need for studies that shed light on measures that can increase inclusion in working life for people with health challenges.
Deadline: 6 September 2017.

Aurora mobility grants for researcher exchange with France Scientific staff/groups of researchers at Norwegian institutions may seek funding for short-term stays in France to launch and develop joint research projects.
Deadline: 6 September 2017.

IS-DAAD: researcher exchange with Germany. Funding is available for short-term visits in Germany for the purpose of launching and developing new joint research projects.

FORNY2020 The main objective of FORNY2020 is increased commercialization of promising research results from publicly funded research institutions.

Gender Balance in Senior Positions and Research Management (BALANSE) Funding is available for projects designed to bring about cultural and structural change that promotes gender equality and gender balance in senior positions and research management.

Biotechnology for Value Creation (BIOTEK2021) The medical sector aims to develop the biotechnological knowledge base, while focusing on better utilization of existing research results.

Research-based innovation (FORNY2020) The program will support the development of results from both researchers and students, and will contribute to innovation in all fields of study and business and in the public and social sectors.

New FET OPEN – NOVEL IDEAS FOR RADICALLY NEW TECHNOLOGIES (H2020-FETOPEN-2016-2017  FET OPEN supports research and technology activities that are at an early stage and have ideas for radically new future technologies as the theme.  The supported projects often have a high risk profile, but also a high upside in the development of new technology areas.

Funding to encourage increased participation in EU health research (HELSE-EU): Support for development of proposals for EU funding for health research
The primary objective of the HELSE-EU scheme is to encourage Norwegian health researchers to participate under Horizon 2020 and to promote the submission of more project proposals. This fund is for collaboration to develop project proposals in areas of strategic importance for health.

European Research Council (ERC) Frontier research grants

Starting Grants  ERC Starting Grants are designed to support excellent Principal Investigators at the career stage at which they are starting their own independent research team or programme. Applicant Principal Investigators must demonstrate the ground-breaking nature, ambition and feasibility of their scientific proposal.
Deadline: 17 October 2017

Synergy Grant ERC Synergy Grants are intended to enable minimum two to maximum four Principal Investigators and their teams to bring together complementary skills, knowledge, and resources in new ways, in order to jointly address ambitious research problems.
Deadline: 14 November 2017


Marie Sklodovska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Excellent and innovative research training plus attractive career and knowledge-exchange opportunities through cross-border and cross-sector mobility, no thematic priorities.

Individual Fellowships (IF): aims to help experienced researchers to advance their careers and gain new skills through advanced training, international mobility, and optional intersectoral secondments. The host organization can  be universities and research institutes in addition to a company or other non-academic sector organizations.

The COFUND: aims at stimulating regional, national or international programmes to foster excellence in researchers’ training, mobility and career development.

Spreading excellence and widening participation through engaging organisations of those countries which could commit more towards the EU research and innovation effort.

Twinning WIDESPREAD-05-2017: The specific challenge is to address networking gaps and deficiencies between the research institutions of the Widening countries and internationally-leading counterparts at EU level. CSA Coordination and support action.

Horizon 2020 – Complementary Calls


IMI2 Call 11 and Call 12 launch the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) is launching two new Calls for proposals with topics on Alzheimer’s disease, big data, vaccines, autoimmune disease, the blood-brain barrier, drug development, and the exploitation of IMI project results.

IMI2 Call 12 Two stage proposals. The topics of this call are:

COST Action: open Call – COST does NOT fund research itself, but supports networking via different tools such as meetings, short term scientific missions, training schools and dissemination activities part of COST Actions. Proposals should reflect the main characteristics of COST Actions, namely providing for knowledge sharing, creation and application, being open and output-oriented while aiming at strengthening the scientific and technological basis of the proposed topic(s). Human Brain Project (HBP) is a H2020 FET Flagship Project which strives to accelerate the fields of neuroscience, computing and brain-related medicine. HBP is asking potential new Partners to submit proposals that will directly contribute to the development of the HBP Platforms and increase the scope of their application, in terms of neuroscience and clinical research. PES and POS (Project establishment support) and POS (posisjoneringsmidler) for Horizon2020 applicants (Norges Forskningsråd/UiB): open-ended during Horizon2020 Call period. Each H2020 coordinator-submitted, and formally approved/eligible proposal, will receive a PES grant without submitting a PES-application. Each submitted and formally approved/eligible partner proposal will receive a minimum of NOK 20,000 without submitting a PES-application.

Other institutions / foundations / grants


The Research Fund for Asthma and Allergy aims to promote research in the asthma and allergy sectors. In 2017, the fund will award NOK 500,000 to research projects and pilot projects. Criteria for application: 1) Promote research in the asthma and allergy sectors 2) Projects with focus on children will have some priority 3) Maximum application amount is NOK 150 000.

The Olav Thon Foundation – support for Nordic research projects in medicine 2018 supports research projects that have focus on either 1) mechanisms of antibiotic resistance or 2) development of new antibiotics or 3) strategies to combat antibiotic resistance.

NordForsk: A call for research projects on the shifting preconditions for societal security in the Nordic countries: The overall context of this call is the relationship between societal security and the Nordic model of society. The LEO-foundation: grants for dermatological research projects. The LEO Foundation supports international dermatological research projects and activities that address issues in disease understanding, disease treatment, disease awareness and patient wellbeing.

Upcoming call Centre for Advanced Study (CAS)  The agreement between UiB and CAS gives researchers with a permanent scientific position an opportunity to apply for their own research group for a one-year stay at the center.  They choose their own theme and specialization, and invite researchers from all over the world to participate in the project.

Helse Vest’s research funding 2018; Call for proposals
Research funds are to be an incentive as well as an economic contribution to produce more high quality research, and to build research expertise through awarding PhD and postdoctoral fellowships. Applications to Helse Vest are evaluated for scientific quality and the project’s benefit to patients and impact on patient care. These two criteria are equal.

ExtraStiftelsen In the field of health The Extra Foundation supports time-limited projects and measures. This includes preventive health care, rehabilitation, habilitation, care and public health work. In the field of research, one main goal is to link research closer to the health challenges that residents in Norway face in their daily lives in the municipalities.

EEA The activities funded under this call should aim at planning of joint research undertakings, joint proposals to be submitted under Horizon 2020 and other international R&D funding programmes.

The Novo Nordisk Foundation
The program supports application-oriented research and test new ideas that may lead to the development of new medical treatments, disease prevention, devices and diagnostic methods. The goal of an Exploratory Pre-seed Grant is to stimulate entrepreneurship and to explore the potential of research findings at a very early stage.

Fulbright Grant supports both researchers associated with universities and research institutions in Norway and applicants who do not have formal ties with a Norwegian institution. All subjects. Scholarships range from NOK 100,000 to NOK 200,000.

Fellowships and Personal Grants


EMBO (European Molecular Biology Organization) Fellowships
Research on the molecular mechanisms of life at all levels.
Deadline: throughout the year.

Short-term Short-Term Fellowships fund research exchanges of up to three months between laboratories in eligible countries.

Long-term The EMBO Long-Term Fellowships are awarded for a period of up to two years and support post-doctoral research visits to laboratories throughout Europe and the world.

Applications received by 11 August 2017 will be evaluated in their autumn meeting, with interviews in October.  Outcomes will be announced on the first week of December.


ERS | EMBO Fellowships The goal of this joint programme is to encourage collaboration between clinicians and basic researchers and to bring more clinicians into basic science. The ERS is interested in offering such fellowships particularly to clinicians working in the field of respiratory medicine.

NordForsk International Postdoctoral Research Fellowships within the Nordic Neutron Science Programme. The call is thematically open and supports fellowships within any scientific field using neutron scattering techniques, including instrument and method development

Scholarship for research stay abroad for PhD candidates and Post Doctors (Link in Norwegian)
The offer for a scholarship for research stays abroad applies to PhD candidates and Post Doctors in projects with full or partial funding for the Research Council for a minimum of 24 months. The research stays abroad may last for a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 12 months.


Globallink – Scholarships to Canada (Link in Norwegian)
Globalink allows for the Norwegian and Canadian master’s and PhD students can apply for CAD 15.000 to conduct research practice in a business in the partner country.


Nærings-ph.d. (Industrial PhD)
The overall objectives are to increase the recruitment of researchers to Norwegian industry, to boost long-term competence building and increase research efforts in business and industry and to enhance interaction between academia and industry.

FINNUT is a long-term programme for research and innovation in the educational sector. The programme funds research on a wide spectrum from early childhood education and care to higher education and adult learning.

Mobility grants North America in educational research (UTNAM)
The aim of the mobility grant is to contribute to increased cooperation between Norwegian and North American educational researchers through supporting visits to Norway for the purpose of research or dissemination for top North American educational researchers. The scheme will also contribute to the dissemination of results of North American research to Norway and furthermore contribute to competence building in Norwegian research communities. Grants will be awarded for visits of shorter or longer duration.

International bilateral research cooperation (INT-BILAT)
The Research Council supports travel to and participation in events that expand industry-oriented R&D cooperation with Brazil, Canada, China, India, Japan, Russia, South Africa and the US. The applicant must have an existing or recently concluded project funded by the Research Council.
Deadline: Open-ended application deadline. The call will remain active until all the available funding has been awarded (NOK 2 million).
