Want some funding?

Well, then you must at least apply!

The intention of small assets (SMÅFORSK) is to support groups that do not have major funding, to enable them to start new projects. SMÅFORSK is a joint funding from the NRC and the University of Bergen and it has to be used the year it is granted. Applicants can ask for covering of costs of travels, workshops, courses, material, technical and administrative assistance and other operating expenses. In line with the intentions, it is a requirement that the applicant is a permanent employee and an active researcher at the Department of Clinical Science. The Department management will emphasize that the applicants have applied for funding from other sources over the last two years.

Criteria and requirements

The research group by its leader is the applicant and the purpose must be discussed and prioritized within the research group
It must be documented that the group applied for other external research funding in 2015
The funding is for one year and have to be used within the fiscal year, as the funds are not transferable to the next year.
The funds will be granted to research groups that do not already have large assets
Documentation on how the funds will be spent must be presented

Don’t do like he in the parable of the talents that buried it. Use SMÅFORSK to invest in larger future grants.

Changes in the introductory seminar

There are some changes in the introductory seminar for new international employees.
Instead of a full-day seminar there will be two half-day seminars.
Part 1 – runs about once a month. The topic is: Practical information and offers for international researchers at the University of Bergen and Obligations and rights as an employee at the University of Bergen.

New Names

We present Jianhua Han, MSc in Molecular Medicine.
Jianhua started as a staff engineer in Emmet’s group of Translational Molecular Imaging in Cancer in Janurary 2016.
If you would like to say hello, you will find her on the 9th floor (room 9920) in the lab building.

Announcement of PhD and postdoctoral positions, spring 2016

New PhD and postdoctoral positions at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry:
This spring MOF announces the following grant-funded PhD and postdoctoral positions;
16 PhD positions
12 open positions
2 positions earmarked dentistry (community dentistry and maxillofacial radiology)
2 x 50% positions earmarked the double compentencies course in dentistry (oral surgery and endodontics)

3 postdoctoral positions
2 open positions
1 position earmarked the faculty’s core facilities (Core Facility for Metabolomics (CMB), Core Facility for Flow Cytometry, Molecular Imaging Center (MIC), Core Facility for Proteomics (PROBE), Genomics Core Facility (GCF), The Laboratory Animal Facility, Core Facility for Biostatistics and Data Analysis and Research Unit for Medical Examinations).

Announcements will appear in BT, Job Norway and Euraxess Sunday, 14 February. Application deadline 3 March 2016.

Exemption From Printed Chemical Database

UiB’s exemption from having a printed chemical database has been extended for 2 years.
As before, there are some requirements we must meet: Easy access to the electronic chemical database (PC, mobile, ipad, etc), and for those chemicals that have the assertion of “patient immediately to hospital” or “emergency medical attention required” (section 4 of SDS) the SDS should be available at the lab.

Call for nominations: Johnny Ludvigsson Prize

The Swedish Child Diabetes Foundation is pleased to announce that nominations are now welcome for candidates for the 2016 Johnny Ludvigsson Prize for excellent research in childhood and adolescent diabetes.

PhD Comics

Helga

Tuesday was Helga’s funeral. The church at Storetveit was full to the brim. Several hundred people attended. The funeral was a beautiful, warm and a dignified farewell to Helga. For me the lasting memory is of her husband Pål and their fantastic sons who all held moving eulogies for Helga.

I have thought a lot about what Pål said in the church: Helga left life, but she did not leave us.

These are strong words. Although Pål might have meant their family by using the word “us”, I think it applies to us all. And that we should all try to follow up her example. Helga was exceptional at seeing those around her and giving them positive feedback. We can all learn from her.

Academia is very competitive, and so it should be. However, while fighting for positions and resources we should not forget that we are all vulnerable human beings. We must all try to take care of each other, including those who seem to always excel. That would be a dignified and fitting way to honour Helga’s legacy.

Incorrect parking

As a consequence of frequent incorrect parking we will remind you that the parking places “on the roof” outside the laboratory building are reserved. Cars parked in the wrong place create a lot of frustration and time lost for those affected. Parking places can not be used without prior agreement with the person who has been allocated the space, or with parking responsible Ingvild Lekven Jonsvoll. If this problem continues, fines and tow-aways will be effected.

Apple withdraws adapters

Apple withdraws a specific type of power adapter that has been in use for Mac machines (and some iOS devices) in recent years. Follow the link below to read more about this, and instructions for how to check whether you have an affected adapter. http://www.apple.com/no/support/ac-wallplug-adapter/
If you have one of the affected adapters you can bring it to the IT department in order to receive a new one. Please contact the https://bs.uib.no/ before coming so that we can arrange to have a new one ready.
PS. Remember to bring your old adapter so that we can deliver it on to our supplier.

The three best presentations in the categories oral and poster were awarded, and one from each category also won the “People’s favorite award”. First place for oral presentations went to Simon Dankel from K2, while Anna Berg, also from K2, won first place for her poster presentation.
