Leader of the week - Kurt Hanevik

All mid term evaluations for the department’s PhD candidates have now been completed for this semester. A big thank you to Irene for organizing everything, and to everyone who has contributed in the evaluation committees.

Many research groups now work on updating their web-pages. It is important that our department presents updated and informative web-pages about our activities. The launch of the new W4 pages is scheduled for 11th June.

I would also like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that all projects involving the processing of personal data in research and student projects at UiB must be registered in RETTE, and kept up to date. The system has been in use for several years now and is intended to ensure that we meet our legal obligations as a research institution, but it has become even more important with the new Health Research Act. Project leaders must ensure that project information is updated, for example, if the project period is extended or responsibilities change. RETTE has recently undergone an overhaul to make it more user friendly. Improved routines have been established for the automatic transfer of REK correspondence, and K2’s RETTE contacts will now more frequently check that projects are up to date. As of today, 171 projects are registered at K2.

Finally, let me remind you about the 24 May deadline to apply for funding to finalize applications for the NFR FRIPRO program (see last week’s editorial).

Wishing everyone a wonderful 17 May celebration!

Seminar: The role of the physician in motion – experiences, tensions and opportunities

Slik blir du lege

What does it mean to be a doctor today, and how is the role of a doctor changing? This is the theme when we invite you to the Philosophical Outpatient Clinic and the event "The role of the doctor in motion: experiences, tensions and opportunities" Midgard, Alrek health cluster 11–12 May 2026.

Through short lectures, workshops and conversations, we examine how responsibility is actually practiced in everyday life, and how this practice helps shape the role of the physician, both today and in the future. The event aims to stimulate reflection and dialogue across experiences and perspectives.

We start each day at 4:45 PM with pizza (4:45 PM–5:15 PM), before the program continues with introductory lectures, workshops and conversations (until 8:00 PM). Read more here:

It is possible to participate on one or both days, whichever suits you best.

We need to take better care of cancer patients who return home

A new report shows that many cancer patients in Norway do not receive adequate follow-up after treatment in hospital.

Nylig kom de ferske krefttallene fra Kreftregisteret. For the first time, over 40,000 Norwegians have been diagnosed with cancer in one year. It is a historic milestone and a powerful reminder that the need for good follow-up has never been greater.

Canvas Security Incident

There has been one sikkerhetshendelse which affected the cloud service Canvas LMS on May 1, 2026. It is stated that personal data has been compromised. UiB's learning platform Mitt UiB is not affected by the incident.

My UiB uses a version of Canvas that UiB operates itself and where data is stored in UiB's own data centers. UiB has decided to switch to the Canvas cloud service during the 2026/2027 academic year and will start a pilot project in the fall of 2026. Due to the incident, UiB has chosen to put data transfer to Canvas on hold until the situation is clarified and the supplier can guarantee the security of our data. A limited amount of test data from UiB may be affected, but so far we have no indications of this.
