UiB postpones LMS pilot

The University of Bergen has decided to postpone further progress in the project for the introduction of a new Learning Management System (LMS). The project will introduce a new cloud-based Canvas solution. The background is the ongoing assessment of the security situation at the supplier of Canvas.

Start-up spring 2027

– It is important to ensure that a future LMS solution meets UiB's requirements for information security, privacy and stable operation. We therefore want to use the time until August to thoroughly review the situation, says Pro-Rector Sigrunn Eliassen.

Access to MittUiB protected by VPN

Ex.phil. ved UiB | Institutt for filosofi og førstesemesterstudier | UiB

Dear colleagues,

As many of you have already heard through a message from central authorities before the weekend, Mitt UiB (Canvas) has been temporarily placed behind VPN as a security measure.

Message from IT Director Tore Burheim (slightly paraphrased):

The cloud version of Canvas was hacked for the second time in six months on April 29, and the provider has been reluctant to provide information about the reasons for the hack. On Friday, May 8, they were hacked again. Mitt UiB is an open source version of Canvas that runs in UiB's own data rooms. Based on all the information that was communicated earlier in the week (note: week 19), there were no indications that UiB was affected by the hack, quite the opposite. However, the new hack and the new information that is known mean that we cannot rule out that there are significant, but unknown security holes in our version of Canvas as well. The situation is so unclear that we want to be cautious and want to make sure. We have therefore decided to put MittUiB behind a VPN for the time being. It is a simple measure that significantly reduces the risk in this situation.

**

Unfortunately, this causes challenges for several of you who are on temporary employment and who mainly use hospital PCs. We are aware that VPN (UiB) cannot be installed or used on these machines, and that this prevents access to courses and teaching materials in My UiB.

We are now working to clarify possible solutions, both locally and at the faculty level, but this will take some time.

Until further notice, the following temporary solutions apply:

  • To access My UiB, you must use a device where UiB-VPN can be used (for example, a private PC or UiB-PC).
  • If you do not have such access, please contact your course or semester coordinator so that we can try to assist with uploading and posting the material on Mitt UiB. If you are unsure who to contact, you can send the material to the study administration at K1/K2: studie.kliniskmedisin@uib.no.

We are aware that this creates practical challenges, especially for teaching, and we apologize for the inconvenience this causes. We will return with updated information as soon as we know more about further solutions.

Please contact us if you have specific needs or challenges we should be aware of.

The IT department has come up with a solution where you go to the website wvd.uib.no and log in to a so-called virtual machine with your UiB username and password. There you can access My UiB without VPN. See the attachment for a short step-by-step guide.

UiB learning conference October 29 – invitation to contribute

Dear Deans of Education,

This year's learning conference will be held in NG5 on October 29th. Invitasjon til å bidra er ute nå, with a deadline for submission on June 30th.

Main theme: On the way to post-digital higher education?
We are entering a post-digital era where the boundaries between physical and digital learning environments are increasingly blurred. Teaching is now multimodal, hybrid, platform-mediated, and influenced by the rapid development of generative AI. These changes not only require us to adopt new tools, but also require us to critically examine how knowledge, participation, assessment, and academic integrity are affected.
