New application period for welfare cabins

You can now submit an application for the desired period at the welfare cabins for winter 2026, in the period January 4 to April 9: Velferdshytter

Winter and Easter holidays have their own application forms. Winners in 2023–2025 are asked not to apply for 2026 due to a three-year quarantine. Quarantined applicants will be manually removed.

When applying, you must prioritize the desired cabin and period. Allocated cabins must be confirmed or cancelled via the link in the allocation email - it is not acceptable to omit confirmation.

Cancellation deadline: At least 30 days before the rental period to avoid fees.

All applications must be registered in UiB's electronic housing system (https://reg.app.uib.no/hytter) when logging in with your UiB username and password. First-time applicants must enter some additional information.

Application deadline: November 1, 2025 Draw dates:

  • If you have english-speaking employees or colleagues, it would be great if you could let them know about the course. 
  • Also, if there are any norwegian-speaking employees who are unable to attend norskspråklige kurset som er 28. oktoberthey are welcome to sign up for the english version, if they don’t mind that the course is held in english. 
  • The course in english was cancelled this spring due to too few registrations, and we won’t be able to continue offering it unless we get enough participants.

Faster aging linked to having a father who smoked as a teenager

Researchers claim that boys who started smoking at 15 or younger have children with a higher "biological age" Poppy Koronka, health correspondent

If you're aging faster than your peers, your father may be the cause—especially if he smoked as a teenager.

Research suggests that smoking among boys aged 15 and younger may damage developing sperm – causing their children to age “faster” than expected.

The study examined “epigenetic clocks” in 892 people from various European countries and Australia, aged 7 to 50. The participants gave blood samples and answered questions, including whether they or their parents had smoked, and if so, when.

The blood samples were analyzed for epigenetic changes to measure biological age. Extra molecules accumulate in the DNA of cells as we age, and the team analyzed these changes using three different methods of measuring biological aging.

Participants whose fathers started smoking during puberty had a biological age that was about nine to twelve months higher than their actual age. The difference increased to 14–15 months if the person themselves had smoked.

Among those whose fathers started smoking later in life, researchers at the University of Bergen found a much smaller increase in biological age. No significant difference was found if the mother smoked before pregnancy.

The study was presented at the European Respiratory Society Congress in Amsterdam. Dr. Juan Pablo Lopez-Cervantes said: “Our research group has previously shown that smoking during puberty can harm not only the smoker but also their future children. In this new study, we wanted to investigate whether parental smoking during puberty can also affect the biological aging of their children.”

He added: "Accelerated biological aging is important because it has been linked to increased risk of diseases such as cancer, arthritis and dementia. Our results suggest that boys who smoke during puberty may be unknowingly harming their future children."

The researchers believe that smoking at a young age can alter the quality of developing sperm. "Although this research is still in its early stages, we believe the findings are important for young boys who smoke or use other nicotine products. Stronger measures to prevent tobacco use among youth should be a priority for policymakers. Such measures could benefit both current and future generations."

New research school in microbiology – MiMa:Microbiology Matters

Microbiology Matters (MiMa) is a PhD school with worklife relevance, focusing on One Health and infectious diseases, Viruses, Bacteria, Fungi, Parasites, Host-microbe interactions, Zoonoses, Antimicrobial resistance and Bioinformatics. Any PhD-candidate that works within these fields are welcome to join. Contact persons at K2 are Kurt Hanevik and Rebecca Cox.

CCBIO Junior Scientist Symposium

Welcome to the CCBIO Junior Researcher Symposium on October 16, 2025 in the BB building – Auditorium 4. We are honored to have Shuntaro Yamada as the keynote speaker with his talk "From teeth to therapies: Promising use of stem cells from teeth for tissue regeneration", providing groundbreaking insights into regenerative medicine. Daniela Pavlicenco will present innovative research on tracking metastatic endometrial cancer using cellular barcode technology to uncover clonal dynamics. Lucia Cestelli will share insights into lung health and disease patterns based on extensive Norwegian population surveys. Aanchal Chopra will discuss the development of patient-derived 3D microtissues to model the tumor microenvironment in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. Finally, Noemie Astrid Myriam Dudzinska will explore how the gut microbiota affects the gut-brain axis and contributes to neurodegenerative processes.

We expect this symposium to inspire insightful discussions in a dynamic and collaborative environment, and provide an excellent opportunity to connect with new and inspiring researchers across disciplines.
