This week's editorial - Svein Skeie

Hello everyone,

Autumn is often a work-intensive period, this year perhaps even more so than before with challenges in many areas. This applies to both the faculty, K2 and Stavanger University Hospital (SUS). At SUS, the main focus now is that on Sunday in 4 weeks we will move into the new SUS with all the somatic day care activities. This means a lot for patients and employees, and for researchers and students. The maintenance of the students' teaching and practice during the moving period is planned based on these assumptions. After the move, student activities will take place both at the new SUS and in the environments that will still remain at the current location in Våland. The faculty of medicine has some space integrated into the new SUS and additional space in a nearby building (Archives House). The curriculum for the multi-campus model for Vestlandslegen has been under consultation and SUS is also very keen that this will be successful.

SUS will follow up on the assessments in NFR's EVALMEDHELSE which was clear that increased collaboration with the university is recommended for further research efforts and development. This will also be part of SUS' new research strategy. Here there are opportunities for many K2 environments to expand research collaboration across the faculties' locations. If you need contact information for possible research collaboration, please feel free to contact me!

Have a great weekend!

Nobel Prize for research on "innovation-driven economic growth"

Over the past two centuries, for the first time in world history, we have seen sustained economic growth, writes nobelprize.org in a press release.

They further write that economic growth has lifted large numbers of people out of poverty and laid the foundation for today's welfare.

This year's economics laureates, Joel Mokyr, Philippe Aghion and Peter Howitt, explain how new innovations sow the seeds of further progress, according to the Royal Norwegian Academy of Sciences, which presents the prize.

3 Norwegian winners

Three Norwegians have received the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics.

Ragnar Frisch, professor ved Universitetet i Oslo og internasjonalt anerkjent for sitt arbeid innenfor sosialøkonomi, økonometri og matematisk statistikk, mottok den i 1969 sammen med Jan Tinbergen, Nederland.

Trygve Haavelmo, professor of social economics and statistics at the University of Oslo, was awarded the prize in 1989.

Finn E. Kydland received it together with Edward C. Prescott, USA, in 2004. Kydland is a professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara and adjunct professor at the Norwegian School of Economics.

Screen time can also lead to good mental health

Screen time among young people is often cited as a contributing factor to a number of challenges facing young people today, such as increased mental health problems, cyberbullying, and poorer school performance.

Apps for better mental health

On their mobile phones, young people can also download apps specifically aimed at strengthening their mental health. Worldwide, it is estimated that there are over ten thousand such apps available today. These apps can be good resources to support young people with specific challenges such as anxiety, depression or stress. They can also be more general, focusing on strengthening mental health and well-being.
