Project Management for Academics

Project Management for Academics

Interested in understanding project management in the context of academia? This course offers an in-depth look at project management practices within academic environments, highlighting how they contrast with those in other industries. We will focus on the distinctive aspects of managing research projects and evaluate the potential advantages of learning from strategies outside academia to enhance project management in academia.

Time: November 11th from 12:00 to 13:00
Place: Room 9.1 and 9.2, Lab Building

– Six out of ten women want more information about menopause.

This is revealed in a new Norwegian study where Marianne Natvik is the first author. Menopause is still shrouded in myths and rarely discussed, even among healthcare professionals. Menopause usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55, but it can also come earlier or later. Most women will experience one or more symptoms of menopause, and some will be greatly affected. But what are normal menopausal symptoms, and what can we do about them? And how can healthcare professionals facilitate a smoother transition?

The Center for Research on Heart Disease in Women invites you to a seminar on menopause.

Everyone is welcome!

Marianne Natvik is a doctor and specialist in general medicine. She is currently working on her doctoral project “Information about Menopause – Women’s Needs and the Role of the General Practitioner” at the University of Oslo. She is a sought-after speaker on topics such as gynecology, stress management, and self-care. In addition to working as a general practitioner, she also holds a part-time position as a doctor at Grünerløkka Youth Health Station and teaches medical students at UiO.

Dear everyone!

I continue to nag a little about employee interviews. The responsibility for carrying them out is assigned to the research group leaders, and it is therefore important that all employees at K2 belong to a research group. Susanne is working on updating the overview of the research groups, so feel free to check with her if you do not know who your research group leader is. Remember that this year I will have an employee appraisal with all associate professors and professors in a 50% position or more, I will send out possible dates to those concerned during the next week.

In order to follow up on my desire for closer dialogue with the teaching group, research group and core facility leaders, it will be a little more often that we have joint meetings with the management group. The next time will be:

29 October: UGLE meeting with all Teaching Group Leaders (UGLE) and vice-UGLE

26 November: FORUM meeting with all research group and core facility leaders

Have a great weekend! Remember to set the clock on Sunday 😊

Input Meeting on Portfolio Plan for Groundbreaking Research

Input Meeting:

  • November 4th. 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM Digital

For the ten portfolio boards appointed at the beginning of 2024, work is now underway on new portfolio plans. We invite you to provide input on the draft portfolio plan for Groundbreaking Research. The meeting is for representatives from research institutions in the institute and university sectors.

The portfolio plans are governance documents that aim to provide predictability for both applicants and funding ministries. They are brief and overarching and are concretized in an investment plan that is updated annually.

In the meeting, the goals, priorities, and measures in the draft portfolio plan will be reviewed.

Expanded Monitoring Service for Clinical Studies in Helse Vest!

The regional cooperation body for research and innovation decided in its meeting on November 24, 2023, to strengthen the monitoring service. New is that the offer is now extended to include clinical studies that are not subject to mandatory monitoring. It is now possible to order monitoring of studies with increased risk.

Monitoring of clinical studies ensures that they are conducted, documented, and reported in accordance with the protocol, GCP, regulatory requirements, and relevant legislation. Monitoring is mandatory in drug studies and studies on medical devices that are to be CE marked. For other interventional studies, monitoring is optional. Experience from the Norwait study suggests that more studies than today should be monitored.

All health trusts in Helse Vest can report the need for monitoring. A form has been prepared as a guide for the trusts’ assessment of whether monitoring should be carried out. The completed form with relevant study documents is received by the monitoring service, which then assesses whether the study meets the criteria for the new scheme. Studies will be prioritized in case of high demand. A monitoring plan tailored to the individual study will then be prepared.

There is no co-payment for monitoring under this scheme.

Leader of the week

Dear everyone,

For those who do not know me, my name is Svein Skeie, and I am the Research Director at Stavanger University Hospital (SUS) and an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine/K2. My professional background includes specialties in internal medicine, geriatrics, and endocrinology. I am pleased to be part of the leadership team at K2, and it is natural for me to write a leader’s note from time to time.

At SUS, we are now well underway with Vestlandslegen – both with students and positions. It is a significant challenge to implement the study plan in the hospital. We are also building a new hospital (new SUS), where most of the somatic inpatient activities will move in November 2025. This also needs to be prepared for UiB. In the new hospital, UiB has about 1000m² of its own space, providing a much better starting point than we previously had for practice students (2015 plan). Alongside building the education, research activities will also be developed. Research has not been the main focus so far, but with more employees in part-time positions, new opportunities arise, also for colleagues employed in Bergen. The research opportunities at SUS are good, and increased collaboration can provide new research opportunities for the subjects under K2. In 2023, SUS and UiB had a total of 163 co-publications, showing that there is already significant activity.

Perhaps you have colleagues at SUS with whom it would be natural to collaborate more? Maybe you want to collaborate but are unsure how to establish it? If you need help finding your way into SUS, please feel free to contact me.

Have an excellent weekend!

Svein
