Science communication on social media

How and why should researchers use social media for communication? Join an engaging discussion at the next Formidlingsforum (Science Communication Forum).

Magne Paalgard Flemmen (external link) (University of Oslo) communicates sociological phenomena and research with great success on Instagram and TikTok. He has 27,000 followers on Instagram, has appeared on Nytt på Nytt (27 March), and was—somewhat unusually—nominated for the influencer award Vixen Awards 2026.

At the next Formidlingsforum, he will give a presentation on his views on science communication, how and why he uses social media to reach new audiences, and the dilemmas this may involve.

Following Flemmen’s presentation, there will be a discussion/debate facilitated by Vice-Rector Kristoffer C. Vogt, featuring Flemmen Espen Gamlund (UIB) and Vigdis Vandvik (UiB)

Topics will include the advantages and disadvantages of this type of communication, what it takes for more researchers to adopt social media, and whether this is a desirable development—as well as the conditions needed to succeed.

There will be an opportunity for questions and comments from the audience.

Waffles/scones and coffee will be served.

Warm welcome to Tårnsalen!
