Leader of the week

Hello everyone,

First things first: Congratulations to Nina Langeland, who on May 26 was awarded Officer of the Order of St. Olav, for her Norwegian and international contributions within the medical specialty of infectious diseases. The Order of St. Olav is conferred by His Majesty The King as a reward of distinguished services rendered to Norway and mankind.

I would also like to take the opportunity to introduce myself to those of you I haven’t yet had the chance to meet.

My name is Eirik Rekve Thorsheim, and I have been appointed Acting Head of Administration at the Department of Clinical Science until the end of the year. It has been a great start, and I would like to thank everyone who has given me such a warm welcome.

I come from a position as Senior Adviser and Head of the Study Section at the Department of Informatics at the Faculty of Science and Technology, where I have also previously served as Acting Head of Administration.

Five quick facts about me:

Favorite Twist chocolate: Chocolate Toffee (least favorite: Banana)

Preferred hike: Lyderhorn

Favorite season: Autumn

Mountain or sea: Mountain

It is clear that the department is currently facing a challenging financial situation, as we heard at yesterday’s all-hands meeting. That said, I would really like to commend the extensive work I see has already been done - and continues to be done every day. This includes both large and small contributions. I have had the pleasure of meeting and hear about highly dedicated colleagues who achieve impressive results.

As a department, we need to work together and support one another. I have no doubt that through strong collaboration, goodwill, and a true team spirit, we will succeed.

I am very much looking forward to being part of the team going forward.

Leader of the week - Silke Appel

Dear everyone,

I have had every reason to be proud to be the leader of K2 this week: at yesterday's ceremonial honorary doctorate conferment ceremony, the candidate nominated by K2, Anna Louise Gloyn, was appointed honorary doctor. She has had many years of collaboration with Pål Njølstad and his group.

On Tuesday we received the happy news that two of our SFF applications will advance to the final, led by Pål Njølstad/Marc Vaudel (Center for Early-Life Diabetes Mechanisms) and Eystein Husebye/Anette Wolff (Centre for Reciprocal Rhythms in Immunology, Somnology and Endocrinology). Congratulations, it is very nice that both applications from the Faculty of Medicine that advanced to the final are from K2! And to those who did not advance: do not give up, I really appreciate the effort you have made. Maybe there are some opportunities to apply for NFR FRIPRO with parts of the application instead? It is still possible to apply for application support for that via the link that appears when you click on "read more" at the bottom. The deadline is May 24. Funds for applying to NFR FRIPRO (deadline 24.5.26).

Finally, I just want to remind you of the institute meeting on Thursday 28 May at 10-11:30 Auditorium 1 BBB, where we will get to know the finance working group and everyone has the opportunity to provide input.

Leader of the week - Kurt Hanevik

All mid term evaluations for the department’s PhD candidates have now been completed for this semester. A big thank you to Irene for organizing everything, and to everyone who has contributed in the evaluation committees.

Many research groups now work on updating their web-pages. It is important that our department presents updated and informative web-pages about our activities. The launch of the new W4 pages is scheduled for 11th June.

I would also like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that all projects involving the processing of personal data in research and student projects at UiB must be registered in RETTE, and kept up to date. The system has been in use for several years now and is intended to ensure that we meet our legal obligations as a research institution, but it has become even more important with the new Health Research Act. Project leaders must ensure that project information is updated, for example, if the project period is extended or responsibilities change. RETTE has recently undergone an overhaul to make it more user friendly. Improved routines have been established for the automatic transfer of REK correspondence, and K2’s RETTE contacts will now more frequently check that projects are up to date. As of today, 171 projects are registered at K2.

Finally, let me remind you about the 24 May deadline to apply for funding to finalize applications for the NFR FRIPRO program (see last week’s editorial).

Family, friends, schools, associations, workplaces and others form teams for a person they want to support or remember. Together they will walk or run for a whole day to show that there should always be someone on the track for those who are sick.
