Every year, millions of people are affected by serious and incurable brain diseases such as Parkinson's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies. The Mohn Center for Neuroprotection is now being established in Bergen, with an ambitious goal of reversing the trend and preventing disease before it breaks out.
Through research into the sleep disorder REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), researchers can identify people who are in a very early phase of the disease's development – often 10–15 years before the diagnosis is usually made. RBD thus acts as a biological warning, opening up a unique opportunity: to test treatments that can delay or prevent the disease's development before the brain is damaged.
