Congratulations to all the award winners on Faculty Day!

It was with great pleasure and pride to see especially K2’s award winners. Several lecturers from K2 contribute to the Communication Course in MED5/MED6, which was awarded the teaching prize.

Jone Trovik received the teaching prize, while Aase Raddum was recognized as a merited educator.

The publication of the year went to Marc Vaudel’s group, with Jakub Vasicek as the first author and Ksenia Kuznetsova, Dafni Skiadopoulou, Lucas Unger, Simona Chera, Luiza Ghila, Pål Njølstad, and Stefan Johansson as co-authors.

The innovation prize was awarded to Emmet Mc Cormack, Pascal Gelebart, Vibeke Fosse, and May Eriksen Gjerstad.

Good results

I am also very proud of the evaluation report from the Research Council of Norway (EVALMEDHELSE) that we received back a few weeks ago. Here it says that

Both the research and teaching activities have been of high international standard and visibility, which has attracted researchers in basic science and clinicians to successfully collaborate on the well-defined expert areas within this administrative unit. During the current research strategy period of 2021-2024, the administrative unit has been very successful in publishing in top international journals and raising competitive external funding from national and international sources.

At the same time, we have also received suggestions for improvement (including more interaction with actors outside academia) that we will work on in the time to come.

And finally: We still need more helpers for the medical exams OSKE6 (12 June) and OSKE12 (5 June), you do not need to be employed in the administration to register as a helper, everyone is welcome 😊

On June 2, 2025, the Nordic Society of Human Genetics and Precision Medicine (NSHG-PM) will host its annual symposium in Copenhagen, Denmark. The event will take place at the University of Copenhagen’s Mærsk Tower and will focus on the latest opportunities in artificial intelligence (AI) in Nordic healthcare.

The symposium, which is free and open to everyone, will start at 13:00 and last until 17:30. Among the keynote speakers are Sir Rory Collins, PI/CEO of UK Biobank, and leading Nordic researchers who will discuss precision medicine and other current topics. Following the symposium, there will be a reception and poster session.

On June 3, from 13:00 to 14:00, Unnur Valdimarsdóttir from the University of Iceland and Karolinska Institutet will give a special lecture on the COVIDMENT and covidmentYOUNG projects. These projects, funded by NordForsk, use multimodal data to study COVID-19 and mental health among over 550,000 Nordics and other Europeans.

Additionally, a data visualization workshop will be held on June 1 and 2, led by the innovative scientist-turned-illustrator Cara Thompsen. The workshop, titled “Building Stories with Data,” will provide participants with tips on how to create clear and captivating figures to communicate their work. Spaces are limited, so early registration is recommended. NSHG-PM members receive a discount.

Registration is now open, and the deadline for abstract submission is May 20. To qualify for possible short talks or travel fellowships, abstracts must be submitted by Sunday, May 4, at 23:59 GMT.

Breakfast seminar – The good working environment

Working life in change – what about the working environment? Digital breakfast seminar Wednesday 28 May 2025 on TEAMS at 0830-1000 Employeeship and care The working environment is about how we organize, plan and carry out our work.

A good working environment is characterized by good management, participation from employees and clear organizational frameworks. Competence, good communication, mastery and recognition provide both security and well-being. Through the breakfast seminar series Working life in change – what about the working environment?, the safety service at UiB wants to shine a spotlight on the importance of factors that build a good working environment. The second breakfast seminar of the year in the series Working life in change – what about the working environment will be held on Wednesday 28 May. The university as an attractive employer in 2025 is largely about employeeship and care. The Action Plan for Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) is UiB’s overall plan for working environment development. The current action plan is anchored in UiB’s strategy and includes three HSE goals, which are in turn specified in sub-goals. Central sub-goals in the action plan deal with the systematic care of younger academic staff. Modern and good managers know how to focus on good relationships between employees and the importance of being happy in order to perform.

A safe and stimulating working environment contributes to academic environments that master, perform and develop. In 2022, SLATE (The Norwegian National Centre for Learning Analysis) received UiB’s working environment award. Senior researcher Ingunn Johanne Ness will be at the breakfast seminar on 28 May to talk about the working environment work at SLATE. The UiB Ferd career centre supports researchers in the early stages with information and guidance on career opportunities both within and outside academia. Head of UiB Ferd Ellen Hagen has been invited to share experience from the guidance room. The working environment is not something that “administrative” jobs have, each individual is someone’s working environment, whether you are a professor or a research fellow. Over the past few years, the importance of annual performance reviews has been emphasized at UiB in various arenas, including the University Board. Kristin Miskov Nodland will contribute to starting a reflection on how to make performance reviews useful for both managers and individual employees (in light of the current situation)

Professor at Scripps Research Director of Infectious Disease Genomics, San Diego, California
Kristian has spearheaded large international collaborations investigating the emergence, spread and evolution of viral pathogens, including SARS-CoV-2, Zika virus, Ebola virus, West Nile virus, and Lassa virus. He earned his PhD in immunology from the University of Cambridge and performed postdoctoral work in virus genomics at Harvard University and the Broad Institute. https://andersen-lab.com

Lena Hansen (PhD) is a former doctoral student at the Influenza Centre, UiB. She is currently a post doc at the Guthmiller Lab,Univeristy of Colorado, USA studying how the human nasal mucosa induces humoral immune responses.
