Horizon 2020 Spotlight: Other Initiatives

The Europe 2020 strategy is about delivering growth that is: SMART, through more effective investments in education, research and innovation; sustainable, thanks to a decisive move towards a low-carbon economy; and inclusive, with a strong emphasis on job creation and poverty reduction. Europe has identified new engines to boost growth and jobs. These areas are addressed by 7 flagship initiatives. One of those, the Innovation Union, is supposed to boost SMART growth in Europe by refocusing R&D and innovation policy on major challenges for our society like climate change, energy and resource efficiency, health and demographic change, and strengthening every link in the innovation chain, from ‘blue sky’ research to commercialisation.

The Horizon 2020 program is the financial instrument implementing the Innovation Union; and there are many complementary/overlapping activities to join national, regional and local forces from different Member States. Some of them are relevant to MOF:

–         Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI)

–         Nanoelectronics Technologies 2020 (ENIAC)

–         Alzheimer and other Neurodegenerative Diseases (JPND)

–         Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change (FACCE)

–         A Healthy Diet for a Healthy Life

–         More Years, Better Lives – The Potential and Challenges of Demographic Change

–         Antimicrobial Resistance- The Microbial Challenge – An Emerging Threat to Human Health

–         Healthy and Productive Seas and Oceans

supports public-public partnerships in their preparation, establishment of networking structures, design, implementation and coordination of joint activities as well as topping up of single joint calls and of actions of a transnational nature.

–         Active and Healthy Ageing

–         European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP 2)

–         Ambient Assisted Living Joint Programme (AAL)

–         Eurostars-2

  • COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology)

relevant key domains:

–         Biomedicine and Molecular Biosciences

–         Food and Agriculture

–         Forests, their Products and Services

–         Materials, Physics and Nanosciences

–         Chemistry and Molecular Sciences and Technologies

–         Individuals, Societies, Cultures and Health

–         2014: Innovation for healthy living and active ageing

–         2016: Food4Future

complements, supports and adds value to the policies of the Member States to improve the health of EU citizens and reduce health inequalities.

Common to all these initiatives is that they act across the whole research and innovation chain, and bring together all relevant actors at EU, national and regional levels. Thereby, the EU participates in the joint implementation of (parts of) research and development of national programmes. The EU contributes with partial funding to the establishment of the initiatives and/or the launching of joint calls, which European research groups can apply to.
