Dear everyone!

I hope everyone had a nice summer and recharged their batteries, ready for a new semester. A quick reminder to those who have not registered their holidays yet, please do it now! You will also get a reminder from Mia. I am very happy that Mia is back, and many thanks to Ingvild Strømsnes who has stood in for her.

As you can see, K2nytt comes in a new design – many thanks to Øyvind Byrkjedal-Bendiksen, Lene Tøftestuen and Ingri Skulstad Lunde!

The institute's day (8 September 11:30-16:00, Bikuben) is approaching, we will, among other things, greet the new dean's office and listen to their visions and work with the FAMU survey.

And last but not least: We can send proposals for honorary doctoral candidates to the faculty. We are encouraged to nominate relatively young, research-active candidates who have had significant scientific influence in one or more of the faculties' subject areas and at a high international level. Feel free to send suggestions for relevant candidates to me.

Biorender Group License at Klinisk institutt 2

Do you use or are planning on using Biorender in your research? To decrease costs a number of research groups and researchers have organized to purchase individual user licenses as a group.

What is Biorender? Biorender is an online platform that uses thousands of pre-made icons and templates to allow users to create professional science figures in minutes for grants, publications and posters. Additionally, Biorender has recently added the ability to graph and do basic data analysis to the platform (see https://www.biorender.com Scientific Image and Illustration Software | BioRender for more details).

Savings when purchasing as a group: Normally individuals users pay $215.40 USD per year, as a group of over 20 users, the cost is reduced to $215.40 USD per year and for every 3 users licenses purchased an additional 1 is provided free of charge.

GSU grant: Funding for Collaborative Projects and Academic forums – Autumn 2025

Global Societal Challenges (GSU) aims to encourage academic meeting places and collaboration across faculties and is announcing seed funding for this purpose. A minimum of two faculties must be involved in the collaboration on global societal challenges, and the activity must be related to the theme of inequality.The supported activities should aim to develop interdisciplinary research projects, and the projects should include concrete plans for applications to external funding sources and further research collaboration.

The call is directed at academic staff at the postdoc, researcher, associate professor, and professor levels with a primary position at the University of Bergen (UiB). Early-career researchers are encouraged to apply. A maximum of NOK 100,000 will be granted per project.

New names

Welcome to our new colleague

Ida Wiig Sørensen holds a 20% position as Associate Professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine 2 (K2). She is a specialist in medical genetics and Head of Section at the Section for Clinical Genetics, Department of Medical Genetics at Haukeland University Hospital.

Ida is a former research track student at the University of Bergen and earned her PhD at the Department of Biomedicine in 2015. She has a research background in matrix biology and basic biochemistry, but her current interests are more clinically oriented. These include clinical genetics, prenatal diagnostics, and patient-centered healthcare services. Together with PhD candidate Andrea F. Krohn-Hansen at VID, she leads the DIANA study, which investigates informed choices and potential regret among women offered trisomy screening in the Bergen Health Trust.

Dear everyone!

Now it has already been one year with me as head of department. It was a very exciting year with many heights, but also some headwinds. I am proud to be head of a department with so many fantastic employees who contribute to both high-level teaching and, not least, internationally excellent research, according to the committee from EVALMEDHELSE, which further concluded that «Both the research and teaching activities have been of high international standard and visibility, which has attracted researchers in basic science and clinicians to successfully collaborate on the well-defined expert areas within this administrative unit». As Eystein already mentioned last week, we are almost at the finish line with the strategic plan for 2025-2030, where we will include some of the recommendations from the committee.

The past year has been very successful in terms of allocations of external funding that covers indirect costs (ERC, NFR, various allocations from the EU, etc.) and there are many of you who have plans to lead a Center of Excellence (SFF). We have got better routines in place and most people are now familiar with the form that must be filled in for applications for external funding, so that a project economist is connected in time to help with the budget. And even though I unfortunately can’t do magic, and K2 is still running at a loss, we are on the right track! We have vacated some of the area in the lab building, which provides savings both for rent and not least operating costs.

Planning for the multi-campus model for medical education is in full swing, and we have gained many new colleagues in Stavanger. In the autumn, the first 20 medical students who will fullfill the studies in Førde after the 3rd year will start in Bergen, so then there will gradually also be more colleagues there. I hope that as many people as possible can participate in the Institute’s day on 8 September at 11:30-16:00, where we will work with the answers from the working environment survey (FAMU).

Last but not least: Thank you very much to Silje Skrede, you have done a fantastic job as a head of innovation! Lots of good luck in the future as vice-dean for research, research education and innovation! Welcome to Valeriya Lyssenko as the new head of innovation at K2. And thank you very much for your efforts as director of the Centre for Pharmacy to Reidun Kjome, who is now joining the dean’s office as vice dean for education. I wish Lars Herfindal lots of luck as the new director of the center!

Important notice regarding registering vacation

Dear colleague,

UiB HR is now requesting an overview of unregistered vacation days at the department, along with a plan for follow-up.

This creates a significant amount of additional administrative work.

Therefore, please register your vacation as soon as possible in the Self Service Portal. If you need to make changes later, it’s quick and easy to do so.

(Secondary positions is the only exeption).

New WEB-pages

News from the W4-project - New pages for research and research units (research groups, research projects, research centres) at UiB.no

Today, we have launched new pages for the areas of Research (uib.no/research) in both Norwegian and English, as well as pages for research groups, research projects, and research centers. The pages have been launched with a new design and content structure.

In total, we have updated and created 800 new pages. Special thanks to FIA and the faculties for their excellent cooperation.

The research pages are strategically important for highlighting the core activities of the university and showcasing the breadth and diversity of the research. The pages are also fundamental for disseminating research results, recruitment, and collaboration within the various academic environments and projects.

The cooperation agency Helse Vest: Nominate candidates for the research and innovation awards

Before the summer is over, we would like to remind you that nominations are now open for this year’s awards for research and innovation, including young researchers.

The awards will be presented as usual during the research conference in November. We hope you can help spread the word about this in your institutions, and encourage relevant academic communities to nominate good candidates for all the awards.

Siste The deadline for nominations is September 15th, but it’s good to start the process early and there’s absolutely nothing stopping you from submitting your nominations now!
