How can we identify the biological mechanisms that lead to diabetes at an early stage – and act before the disease develops? A proposed Center for Excellence in Research at UiB, iDIA, aims to change how we understand diabetes by taking personalized diagnostics and treatment to a new level.
Diabetes is one of the world's fastest growing health challenges and remains a leading cause of illness and premature death.
According to the World Health Organization, around 830 million people – about ten percent of the world's population – were living with some form of diabetes in 2025.
Diabetes is a chronic condition in which the body either produces too little insulin or is unable to use insulin effectively. The result is elevated blood sugar levels that, over time, can damage nerves, blood vessels, and organs such as the heart, kidneys, and eyes.
Every day, patients at Norwegian hospitals need blood. Yet too few donate. Now the Blood Bank at Haukeland is encouraging everyone who can to register as a blood donor.
– The need for blood never takes a break. A single blood donor can help save up to three lives, says the Blood Bank.
Why give blood?
Blood cannot be made artificially – it must come from humans.
The donation usually takes less than an hour.
You get a health check every time you donate.
It is completely safe, and the body quickly replenishes its blood supply.
Who can become a blood donor?
Most healthy people between the ages of 18 and 65 can donate blood. The first step is to register and complete a simple health screening. The blood bank will then assess whether you can be approved as a donor.
How to register
You can register as a blood donor at giBlod.no, or contact the Blood Bank at Haukeland directly to make an appointment. New donors are especially welcome.
– We are completely dependent on people coming forward. Blood donors are everyday heroes, says the Blood Bank.

UiB idé gives employees and students the opportunity to verify good innovation ideas, which must be developed and tested before they are developed further. The maximum support amount is 500,000 kroner for research projects, and 100,000 kroner for student projects.
The idea must be innovative, meaning that it must be linked to societal benefit and be new, and that there must be a need for it among certain users or society at large. Good ideas exist in all professional environments, and can be social innovations, public sector innovations, process innovations, commercialization projects or
Students applying for UiB Idé can also apply for a place in the new accelerator program of VIS – TILT Studio8. The deadline for applying for a place is February 12th. Find more information here.
