Leader of the week - Silke Appel

Dear everyone!

last week, work was done on the permission to exceed budget limits, which we unfortunately have to deliver this year as well, since we have budgeted for a deficit of NOK 3.7 million in 2026. But K2 has had a gradual improvement in the economy in recent years. While the deficit was NOK 11.2 million in 2023, it was NOK 9.7 million in 2024 and NOK 5 million last year. But with savings in, among other things, area costs (rent and operations), wage costs (many of the positions were/will not be filled after retiring), increased income for the core facilities and, not least, increased BOA to appropriation, there is light at the end of the tunnel: The long-term budget shows an expected small surplus of NOK 1.1 million as early as 2027. I am very happy about this. But even if the development is going in the right direction, we must continue the good work before the department has a sustainable financial situation. But if everyone contributes, we will make it!

Finally, I would like to inform you that Eystein Husebye is now ending his role in the management team of K2. I would like to thank him for his efforts and contributions during the long time he has been in the management team of K2. He has been part of important processes with us, and I really appreciate that.

Have a great weekend!

Silke

MIC's course in small animal MRI 2026

The aim of the course is to provide participants with knowledge of the principles, theory and practical application of MRI. The theoretical part of the course will cover multimodal imaging and the theoretical aspects of MRI. Participants will receive practical training on the instrument in the practical part and learn about basic image analysis of MRI images. After the course, participants should be able to understand how to plan and perform MRI experiments on small animals.

MRCRM conference at Solstrand 14–15 April

Mohn Centre for Regenerative Medicine (MRCRM) invites you to a conference at Solstrand on April 14–15, 2026. The program offers exciting presentations of groundbreaking research and clinical studies in regenerative medicine and wound healing.

We especially encourage young researchers (master's and PhD students) to submit abstracts to The Lightning Talk session, where participants are given five minutes to present their project.

Prices (including accommodation, conference and dinner):

  • Researchers: NOK 2800
  • Master's/PhD students: NOK 2000

In addition, we are offering 10 free day passes to master's students, with priority given to students participating with Lightning Talk.

Support the cancer cause

Thanks to all your support and commitment, we can continue our work for a life without cancer. You can support the cancer cause by giving a fixed amount, donating, becoming a member, creating a fundraiser and many other ways.

The Norwegian Cancer Society's fundraising campaign 2026

The Norwegian Cancer Society's fundraising campaign will kick off on Sunday, March 15. The money raised will help ensure that patients who could benefit from it can receive a genetic test. This could open up new treatments that could extend the lives of many more people.

Make a gift to the campaign today and support vital cancer research!

Seminar: The role of the physician in motion – experiences, tensions and opportunities

Medicine is changing rapidly. New technologies, reforms and increased expectations are putting the health service under pressure – while many health workers describe a working day characterized by fragmentation and limited room for action. What does this do to our understanding of responsibility, and to the professional role we are being trained to perform?

May 11–12, 2026, the Philosophical Policlinic invites you to the seminar "The role of the doctor in motion" at Alrek Health Center. The physician role is used as an introduction, but the topics concern everyone who works in structures where demands for efficiency meet the need for reflection.

The seminar addresses questions such as:

  • When is responsibility reduced to delivering quickly – and what is lost?
  • When is it legitimate to slow down, ask questions, or challenge direction?
  • How do management logics and measurement systems affect our understanding of "good work"?
  • What happens to professional responsibility when the room for action is perceived as small?
  • How do we ourselves contribute to maintaining structures we experience as problematic?

Through short lectures, workshops and conversations, we examine how responsibility is actually practiced – and how this shapes the role of the profession in the future.

Program
4:45–5:15 PM: Pizza
17.15–20.00: Introductions, workshop and discussions

Read more: 11.–12. mai 2026

Visit from Lausanne: Two exciting seminars March 16–17

Next week, K2 and the Mohn Center will be visited by two very strong researchers from the University of Lausanne. Both will be holding seminars on groundbreaking methods in genetics and precision medicine — including a Nature publication in which we are co-authors.

Monday 16 March at 11.15–12.00 – Auditorium 1, Glasblokkene

Zoltán Kutalik: Nature’s randomized trials: genetic perturbations of biomarkers and disease Etter seminaret serveres lett lunsj.

Kutalik vil «show how different approaches to biomarker discovery can pinpoint drug targets» He is a leading statistical geneticist with over 250 publications and broad international experience.

Tuesday 17 March at 10.15–11.00 – BB‑auditorium 4

Robin Hofmeister: Detecting parent-of-origin genetic effects without parental genomes Coffee/tea and biscuits after the seminar.

Hofmeister presents his recent Nature study, in which they «identified over 30 parent-of-origin effects, many of them bipolar» The method makes it possible to detect such effects in biobank data without parental genomes.

Announcement of the Momentum Program 2026-2027

The Momentum program is a career development program for young, outstanding researchers at UiB. The program will be implemented for the eighth time in 2026-2027, and in this connection, 24 places are being announced for the program.

The target group for the program is young, outstanding researchers who have great potential to contribute to the university's research in the long term. The program is interdisciplinary, and the aim is to achieve a composition of different fields of study and scientific disciplines.

The Momentum program is announced with an application deadline of March 20, 2026 at 5:00 PM. Information about admission requirements, the application process, and participation in the program can be found here:

Research Days 2026: Invitation to participate

The Research Days are an annual, national festival organized by the Research Council of Norway, with the goal of creating excitement and understanding for research. This year's festival period is 16.09. – 27.09. 2026. In Bergen, it is held

The Research Days are a collaboration between the city's central research and educational institutions, with UiB being the largest contributor. The Research Days in Bergen are an important arena for public contact and have events for different target groups – children, youth and adults. The communications department coordinates our contributions to the festival.
