Cardiovascular disease is a major cause of reduced quality of life and mortality among women in Norway. Traditional risk factors such as hypertension, obesity, elevated cholesterol levels, and diabetes all have a more adverse impact on cardiovascular health in women than in men. In addition, pregnancy-related complications, gynecological conditions, and menopause may specifically influence women’s risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Chronic inflammatory diseases and mental health disorders may also contribute to increased cardiovascular risk. Current cardiovascular risk assessment tools are primarily based on data from male populations and are therefore less effective in identifying high-risk women. As a result, many women at elevated risk of cardiovascular disease may remain undetected in primary care.
During this seminar, cardiologist and Head of the Norwegian Cardiovascular Disease Registry at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, Annabel Eide Ohldieck, will provide insight into the factors that are particularly important in the development of cardiovascular disease in women.
