37 million for cancer research at UiB
The Cancer Society is showering UiB and Helse Bergen with funds this year. Oleksii Nikolaienko will use the money to learn more about who is at risk of getting cancer.
“It is great to receive this recognition that we are doing something people support,” says Oleksii Nikolaienko at the Mohn Cancer Research Laboratory at the Department of Clinical Science 2, UiB and Haukeland University Hospital.
He is leading one of a total of eight projects from Bergen that have received money from the Cancer Society in this year’s allocation. Five of the projects are owned and operated by the University of Bergen. In total, Helse Bergen and UiB are awarded 61 million NOK.
From K2, Professor Bjørn Tore Gjertsen is also receiving funds from the Cancer Society.

Meltzer and UiB fund
There are a number of foundations with research and education at the University of Bergen as their statutory purposes. These foundations announce funds that both employees and students can apply for, and some of the foundations also have external applicants within their statutory purposes. The largest of these foundations is the L. Meltzer College Fund, and there are also about 25 other foundations from which funds can be applied for.
This portal provides an overview of the foundations from which it is possible to apply for funds. Information is provided about each foundation and its purpose, who can apply, and what can be applied for.
The application deadline for 2025 will be 01.12.2024.

The Meltzer Fund has announced three different awards with a deadline of December 1st.
Meltzer’s Prize for Outstanding Research
The prize is awarded to a researcher or a research group that has distinguished itself through outstanding research. The prize winner must be nationally leading in their field and, if the field exists in other countries, also be well recognized by leading international academic communities. Researchers who are nominated must be permanently employed at UiB.
Meltzer’s Prize for Young Researchers
Up to two prizes can be awarded annually for outstanding scientific work carried out by young researchers. In awarding the prize, particular emphasis will be placed on the researcher’s independence and ability to innovate. Emphasis will also be placed on whether the relevant research contributions appear particularly outstanding or promising, assessed based on the researcher’s age, the nature of the research project, and the research traditions in the relevant field. Researchers who are nominated must be employed at the University of Bergen at the time of nomination. The prize winner must not be over 40 years old in the award year. Researchers who have had parental leave and/or been on sick leave for a period can have this time deducted from the age requirement (relevant documentation must be attached to the nomination).
Meltzer’s Prize for Outstanding Research Communication
The prize for outstanding research communication is awarded for particularly outstanding communication of research. Researchers who are nominated must be permanently employed at UiB. The proposer must justify the nomination based on the candidate’s contribution to the university fulfilling its task of spreading information about research and the importance of research for society.
And the chairman of the board of the Consul Søren Falch and ophthalmologist Sigurd Falch’s fund for medical science, Per Bakke, has requested proposals for the Falch Lecture 2025 with a deadline of December 8th. Here, generally recognized researchers at Nobel Prize level or very high international level will be invited to give a guest lecture and/or seminar at the Faculty of Medicine.

Proposals for the Falch Lecture 2025
The academic communities at the institutes are hereby invited to submit proposals for the Falch Lecture 2025.
The framework for the award is NOK 40,000 to cover fees and travel and accommodation expenses. A cost estimate should be attached to the application. Multiple awards may be possible.
Guidelines for the Falch Lecture
- The proposer is the Board, which can invite generally recognized researchers at Nobel Prize level or very high international level to give a guest lecture and/or seminar at the Faculty of Medicine.
- The Board can invite employees to submit proposals and document their research efforts. Criteria may include publication in prestigious scientific journals, international awards, leadership roles in significant and active international scientific associations and conferences.
- The Falch lecturer should preferably have collaborated with or contributed in some way to the research activities at the Faculty of Medicine. However, this is not a requirement to propose a candidate.
- The Falch Lecture should preferably take place with the physical presence of the lecturer but can also be conducted via digital media.
- The Falch lecturer will be awarded a diploma to mark the event.
Proposals should be sent to okonomi@med.uib.no by 8/12 2024 and will be reviewed by the Board of the Consul Søren Falch and Ophthalmologist Sigurd Falch’s Fund for Medical Science.

This will be the biggest stunt of my life! The professor of chamber music at the Norwegian Academy of Music is looking forward to giving next year’s Aarebrot lecture in the University Hall. He will have music students from the Grieg Academy with him on stage.

Climate Health Initiative (CHI) webinar #2
We are happy to welcome Håvard Haarstad, professor of human geography to the 2nd webinar in the Climate Health Initiative.
His main research focus is social change towards sustainability, particularly in relation to climate. Haarstad is interested in how we can transform cities and urban life – materially, socially and culturally – in order to meet the climate and sustainability challenges that face us.
He is also founding director for the Centre for Climate and Energy Transformation, an interdisciplinary research centre based at the Faculty of Social Science, University of Bergen.
