Projects for BMED320 (Methods in Biomedical Research)

The Department of Biomedicine invites K2 project leaders (PIs) to accept students for practical laboratory work through the course BMED322 (Methods in Biomedical Research).
This is a mandatory course for new Master's students (MSc) that must be completed before starting the main project in the Master's degree. Students participate in a 7-week orientation project in research laboratories. For project managers, this is a good opportunity to get to know the students and potentially recruit MSc students from the Master's program at the Department of Biomedicine.

If you wish to host BMED322 students in your laboratory this year, the following guidelines from the Department of Biomedicine apply.

  • Students will complete a small 7-week research project and become familiar with some of the methods used in biomedical research. After the practical work, they will write a report about the work, designed as a scientific article in the format of a scientific journal of their choice or together with a supervisor.
  • The projects start in week 41. A week or two before this is set aside for planning and discussing the project with the supervisors.
  • Students are placed in the laboratories in pairs, and they also write the scientific article together. They will receive feedback from their supervisor before submitting it for assessment.
  • Supervisors must submit a short project description. The project must be suitable for two students working for 7 weeks. The description should include some background and key research questions, but be open-ended about methods. The idea is for students to read up and think through how the project can be carried out, and then discuss this with their supervisor and make a plan together. Although you as the supervisor may have a fairly clear idea of what needs to be done, it is important to give students room to think for themselves – even if not all ideas are practical or feasible.
  • The project descriptions will be presented to the students on September 22nd, so the descriptions must be sent to the Department of Biomedicine as soon as possible and no later than Monday, September 15th.
  • Send project descriptions to: inari.kursula@uib.no
