Collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology?

UiB has initiated a pilot project with MIT collaboration funds —meaning that researchers from MIT can apply for funding to collaborate with us. The Faculty of Medicine will join this initiative starting this autumn, with call announced in September.

The funding is relatively modest—a grant of $30,000 USD—which can be used for travel and short-term stays in both directions. It is administered by MIT, so the MIT partner will act as the applicant. UiB researchers are encouraged to mobilize their MIT contacts. Environments/researchers at K2 who might be interested are invited to contact research advisor Andreas Westermoen at andreas.westermoen@uib.no before 17th June.

🧠 Neuro-SysMed Seminar: “Different Disease Pathways to Idiopathic Parkinson’s Disease”

📅 Date & Time:
Wednesday, June 25, 2025, 11:30 AM – 1:00 PM
📍 Location: Auditorium, Armauer Hansens Hus

👤 Speaker:
Dr. Antony Cooper

  • Research Director, Australian Parkinson’s Mission, Garvan Institute of Medical Research
  • Associate Professor, UNSW Sydney, School of Clinical Medicine
  • Expert in cell and molecular biology and genetics, with a focus on the mechanisms behind Parkinson’s disease and therapeutic strategies, especially for slowing disease progression in idiopathic patients.

🧪 Topic:
Dr. Cooper will present recent findings from his work identifying three genetically defined subgroups of idiopathic Parkinson’s patients. These findings suggest distinct disease mechanisms, offering new insights into targeted treatment approaches.

🥪 Lunch:
A light lunch is included! Just remember to register by June 23 at 11:00 AM to receive lunch. You may still register after this time, but lunch will not be provided.

Grant announcement – Global Societal Challenges

Globale samfunnsutfordringer (GSU) fosters academic meeting places and collaboration across faculties and announces seed funding for this purpose. At least two faculties must be involved in the collaboration on global societal challenges, and the activity must be linked to the topic “inequality”.

The call is aimed at scientific staff at the postdoc, researcher, associate professor, and professor levels with a primary position at UiB. Early-career applicants are encouraged to apply. A maximum of NOK 100,000 is allocated per project.

CCBIO Junior Scientist on June 6th, 2025

We are delighted to invite you to the upcoming CCBIO Junior Scientist Symposium on June 6th, 2025. This seminar series offers a fantastic opportunity to connect and engage with fellow young scientists. We look forward to vibrant and insightful discussions, as always.

We are honored to welcome Lars A. Akslen, the esteemed director of CCBIO, as our keynote speaker. He will share the fascinating journey of CCBIO’s inception, the challenges and triumphs of leading such a comprehensive organization, and valuable lessons learned along the way. His insights promise to be both inspiring and informative for junior researchers. Oriol Castells Marin will discuss how intracellular signaling signatures from monocytes can differentiate acute myeloid leukemia from healthy blood and bone marrow. Sammy Choi will provide insights on optimizing proteomics workflows for analyzing small samples of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded human kidney tissue. Marthe Alvestad will introduce a dynamic 3D in vitro model for studying kidney disease. And finally, Lars Muhl will explore the molecular characterization of mouse liver cell types using Smart-seq2 single-cell RNA sequencing.

We hope to see you there for an enriching and inspiring experience!  Please register by June 2nd at 11.00. (Also possible later if you won’t be joining the lunch)

When: June 6, 2025, at 09.00-13.00

Where: Auditorium 4, BB building, campus Haukeland University Hospital, Bergen

Registration: on this link

Open to both junior and senior researchers as well as students. The symposium series is open, but also part of the CCBIO Research School under the code CCBIO901.

Program:

09.00-09.15: Introduction

09.15-10.00: Keynote lecture by Lars A. Akslen: “CCBIO crossroads – a brief history and how to navigate the future”

10.00-10.20: Coffee break

10.20-10.45: “Intracellular signaling signatures in the monocytic compartment distinguish acute myeloid leukemia from healthy peripheral blood and bone marrow” by Oriol Castells Marin

10.45-11.10: “Optimizing Proteomics Workflow for Low-input micro-dissected fixated FFPE human kidney tissue” by Sammy Choi

11.10-12:00 Lunch (free of charge, register within June 2nd at 11.00)
