Breakfast Meeting: Neurotechnology

Breakfast Meeting: Neurotechnology

  • Date: December 12, 2024
  • Location: Litteraturhuset in Bergen, Olav H. Hauge Hall – Bergen
  • Time: 08:30-09:15

In 2011, Dutchman Gert-Jan Oskam injured his spinal cord in a traffic accident and became paralyzed. Today, with the help of artificial intelligence and implants in his spine and brain, he can rise from his wheelchair and take a walk in the park. In the USA, a man without mobility has had hair-thin electrodes implanted in his brain, allowing him to control a computer with his thoughts. Neurotechnology is technology that interacts with, monitors, or influences the brain. This technology can help people without the ability to speak to communicate, or help people without mobility in their legs or arms to move. But does the technology also pose a risk of misuse?

In this breakfast lecture, Senior Advisor at the Biotechnology Council, Stine Hufthammer Indrelid, will explain what neurotechnology is and what it can be used for – both the benefits and the risks.
