Biology may influence who benefits from ECT treatment

A new UiB study suggests that biological differences in the body may help determine who benefits from electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for severe depression.

ECT is an effective treatment for severe depression, but is often used as a last resort. A new international study led by UiB shows that patients who respond well to ECT, even before treatment, have clear biological differences in DNA and immune markers compared to those who do not respond. ECT itself does not change gene expression, but the findings may open the way for more accurate and personalized treatment in the future. The researchers emphasize that the results are promising, but need to be confirmed in larger studies.
