Instituttledelsen besøker i skrivende stund Brussel for å lære mer om hvordan K2 sine forskere kan ta del i EU sin forskningsfinansiering. Ikke bare kan EU-penger finansiere forskning – EU-prosjekter er alltid knyttet til internasjonalt samarbeid, noe som bygger opp viktig kompetanse og kvalitet på prosjektene våre. I tillegg til å søke, kan man melde seg som evaluator av EU-søknader. Noen av våre professorer har gjort eller gjør det, men flere kan melde seg. Søknadsvurdering gir verdifull innsikt i hvordan EU arbeider og vil utvilsomt hjelpe den enkelte til å forbedre søknadene sine. Dette kan også være et springbrett til å bli med i de komiteene som legger premissene for fremtidige forskningsprogram slik at våre folk kan søke.
De fleste ser etter utlysninger i Helseprogrammet under Societal challenges. Vi fikk presisert at en bør også se på de andre hovedprogrammene der vi som translasjonelle forskere kan bidra. Videre fikk vi en gjennomgang av European Research Counciil (ERC) sine finansieringsordninger, først og fremst Starting, Consolidator og Advanced grants.
Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions er underutnyttet. De finansierer ikke bare stipend til enkeltpersoner (Individual Fellowships, IF) for å dra ut eller invitere forskere til Bergen. En kan også søke om Innovative training network (ITN) med deltagelse fra minst 3 ulike land, Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE) og Cofunding av eksisterende regionale, nasjonale, og internasjonal prosjekter (http://ec.europa.eu/research/mariecurieactions/index_en.htm). I tillegg kan finansiering av forskninigsnettverk (ikke selve forskningen) søkes gjennom COST Actions.
Vår mann i Brussel Kristof Vlaeminck (kristof.vlaeminck@uib.no) kan bistå med spørsmål av alle slag. Vi vil utarbeide en «selvangivelse» som kan sendes Kristof om ønsker og hvilke kompetanse man besitter slik at han kan spille inn navn fra Norge i aktuelle komiteer. Likeledes vil vi sammen med K2 sine forskningsrådgivere arbeide aktivt for å gjøre søknadsprosessen enklere for K2-forskere. Kristof besøker UiB en gang per måned og man kan avtale møter med han mens han er i Bergen.
UiB sitt kontor ligger strategisk til midt i Brussel med tilsvarende kontor for SINTEF og NTNU i samme bygg og med skriveplass til besøkende UiB-forskere. UiB-forskere kan benytte møte- og konferanserommene i bygget til nettverksmøter. NFR sitt Brusselkontor ligger 5 minutter unna.
Ledelsen har som mål å signifikant øke EU-finansieringen de neste 2 årene. Å skrive EU-søknader er morsommere enn du tror.

Departmental management visits Brussels at the time of writing to learn more about how the department of clinical sience can take part in the EU’s research funding. Not only can the EU money fund research – EU projects are always related to international cooperation, which builds important skills and quality of our projects. In addition to searching, you can sign up as an evaluator of EU applications. Some of our professors have done or are doing that, but more may join. Application evaluation provides valuable insight into how the EU works and will undoubtedly help the individual to improve their applications. This can also be a springboard to join the committees that establish the basis for future research programs so that our people can apply.
Most look for announcements in Health program under societal challenges. We got emphasized that one should also look at the other main programs where we as translational researchers can contribute. Moreover, we got a tour of European Research Counciil (ERC) its financing, primarily Starting, Consolidator and Advanced grants.

Our man in Brussels Kristof Vlaeminck (kristof.vlaeminck@uib.no) can assist with questions of all kinds. We will prepare a «tax returns» that can be sent Kristof about what you wish and what skills you possess so that he can sugest people from Norway for the relevant committees. Likewise, we, together with the research advisors at department of clinical sience work actively to make the application process easier for K2 researchers. Kristof is visiting UiB once per month and you can schedule meetings with him while he is in Bergen.
UiB’s office is strategically located in the middle of Brussels with similar office for SINTEF and NTNU in the same building and with writing space for visiting UiB researchers. UiB researchers can use conference room in the building for network meetings. NFR’s office in Brussel is 5 minutes away.
The management aims to significantly increase EU funding over the next two years. Writing EU applications is funnier than you think.
