Dear CCBIO members and associates,
We have the pleasure of announcing the CCBIO Research Schools PhD course: CCBIO 903 Cancer Research – Ethical, Economic and Social Aspects.
Researchers and clinicians in medical research and care face important dilemmas every day, regarding for instance the prioritisation of research questions, or the choice between treatments for a patient. These dilemmas, involving both ethical considerations and health economics, can decide upon life and death for individual patients.
By bringing together a teaching team of scholars in Science and Technology Studies, in Philosophy and Economics, and by running the course in a participatory way, CCBIO903 offers a unique space for PhD candidates in the medical sciences to engage in broader debates that surround their research. The course is structured according to lectures followed by long time-slots devoted to group discussions.
PhD candidates are asked to review their own research topic according to the ethical, social and economic perspectives they are introduced to in the course, and write about this in a term paper. PhD candidates from various fields of medical research, from all over Norway, who are interested in the broader social, ethical and economic aspects of their work, are warmly welcome to attend!
The PhD course CCBIO903 is a 5 ECTS course part of the CCBIO Research School for Cancer Studies. It is led by Roger Strand and Anne Blanchard, both at the Centre for the Study of the Sciences and the Humanities in Bergen, and John Cairns from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. All three are affiliated with CCBIO.
